Monthly Mood Cycles
In Ashtakavarga

By Phyllis Chubb

Are we powerless in our lives to affect situations, as astrology is often thought to suggest, or is there another way to use astrological information in which conscious choice can make a difference? This article will demonstrate how an assessment of the Moons cycle through the Ashtakavarga system offers us choices rather than keeping us subject to the vicissitudes of karma. Ashtakavarga (eight divisions) is a binary system which reveals the interaction of graha and bhava, one with another. The origin of the system has been lost in time; however, it is generally believed, as Yeshwant K. Pradhan writes in the foreword of C.S. Patel and C.A. Aiyars Ashtakavarga, that the system appears to have originated in the very remote pastIt is quite likely, therefore, that the system originated some centuries before (Sage) Varaha, perhaps a couple of centuries even before Christ.

According to Richard Houck in Digital Astrology, Sage Parashara (in G.C. Sharmas translation of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra) revealed Ashtakavarga as a sophisticated and powerful way of interpreting transits, which is a necessary and helpful tool during an era when the consciousness of astrologers has declined into slow perceptions. Long before the current era, the Jyotishi of ancient India used this method to measure compound effects of energies pulsing from eight astrological energy sources the lagna plus the seven graha comprising the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn. Not only did the sages of yore identify the importance of these energies impacting the earth, they also recognized and categorized the separate and combined frequencies that affect the complexities of human behavior.

In the preface to his book Dots of Destiny, Ashtakavarga expert Vinay Aditya envisions a future when computer programs will be able to generate a new kind of daily horoscope based entirely on Ashtakavarga and transits. The contents of the current article echo this vision and will demonstrate a method of using Bhinna Ashtakavarga to show the effect of Moon transits on cycles of consciousness. If one is unaware of the influences around him, how can he possibly be expected to respond in a purposeful and constructive way? Individual lunar cycles can impact behaviors, and recognizing these can lead to healthier choices.

Following are five case studies, four of whom are superstars with private lives in the public eye, whose exploits are perpetually scrutinized in newscasts and gossip column articles. The birth data of each celebrity is listed in Astro-Databank and is therefore considered to be in the public domain. So the question is, what do these superstar newsmakers Justin Bieber, Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears and Donald Trump have in common? This can be asked and answered through their monthly lunar transits because, according to Jyotish (Vedic Astrology), the Moon is the karaka (significator) of the mind and thus dictates perception, and thought. As the Moon links directly to consciousness, it is also a major contributing factor in the behavior patterns of all life forms.

Ashtakavarga measures the interaction of the eight cosmic energy sources and assigns them numerical values from zero to eight. The values are expressed collectively to display the strength of a bhava, or individually to reveal the strength of a graha; individual values are known as bindus. Although Ashtakavarga evaluates and measures all eight energy sources, the discrete value of the Moon is the only point of energy calculation in use for this method. It is noteworthy that when lunar transit evaluations change rapidly and drastically, an individuals experience shows a similar fluctuation. Such drastic changes correlate positively with erratic decision making, intense mood swings, drug abuse, relationship challenges and general life stress.

For example, it was extensively reported in the news that on October 23, 2010, actress and pop singer Lindsay Lohan was sentenced by a California judge to return back to drug rehab. This unfortunate event occurred during the time when her regular monthly lunar transit had declined into darkness, which will be shown later when her Moon transit cycle is further detailed.

The grid below allows for the graphic depiction of the lunar energy cycle during the sidereal months period, in which the scores of the transiting Moons Ashtakavarga bindus, specifically known as Bhinna Ashtakavarga, are displayed. Most chart-making programs, including Jagannatha Hora or Shri Jyoti Star, and Parasharas Light have the ability to provide these individual ratings, which can then be transferred to the graph.

Readers are welcome to copy this graph for your own use.

The horizontal numbers across the top of this graph represent the path of 12 zodiac signs traversed by the Moon during the course of one sidereal month. The Moon traverses this circuit in 27 days and 7 hours, so each vertical column of 1-12 represents about 2.25 days in time. Number 1 represents Aries, 2 Taurus and so forth. Always starting with Aries provides consistency and the ability to lay one persons pattern over another persons pattern, which is another separate technique to show any contrast in moods between two people. This is particularly useful when helping couples who are experiencing relationship issues.

The vertical columns from 0 to 8 represent levels of intensity, with 0 being the lowest and 8 being the maximum level of received energy: Line 4 represents complete balance or normalcy; Line 3 represents below normal; Line 5 represents high normal. Lines 2 and 6 are buffer lines between the upper and lower danger zones. Extreme lows or highs of transmitted lunar energy can result in drastic changes in how the individual perceives the world:
  • When energy levels get into the 7-8 range, rational thinking tends to leave and the intensity of the light can be blinding. At these levels, the feelings associated with the consciousness of the moment can be totally irrational; often motivated by the notion that absolutely anything can be achieved, as feelings of enhanced ability overtake any sense of caution.

  • Likewise, lines 1-0 are equally dangerous, only this time it is not because of extremely positive feelings; rather, it is because of negative feelings. Either extreme is dangerous.
  • ,/ul> Below is an example of a native with an easy-going nature. This person gave permission for her chart to be used for this purpose.

The graph below shows the natives lunar energy cycle mapping the Bhinna Ashtakavarga of the Moon. Note that the energy glides smoothly all month long. The smooth pattern experienced by this person makes her very easy to get along with, and she is not apt to take actions shell later regret. While it is true that there is a dip to level 2, this can be called more of a little bit low period; everyone, male and female alike, can relate to at least one day a month when things feel just a wee bit off.

The next case shown below is that of Canadian pop-star Justin Bieber, who came to fame and success early in life when he was discovered and promoted as a young teen singing sensation. Numerous websites including his personal biography page discuss in great detail Biebers progress and the events of his life.

Biebers monthly lunar cycle looks like this:

Recent media stories have noted Biebers struggle with addiction, substance abuse and imprudent behavior. His first arrest in January 23, 2014, coupled with a string of brushes with the law and controversial incidents in 2013, led to comments that his image has been transformed from boy-next-door to bad boy, according to some reports.

Before looking at specific dates related to Biebers behavior, look at his graph and identify the transit periods of danger. Aries number 1 and Cancer number 4 signify times when he may be blinded by a lack of reason and subject to reckless actions. This blindness is due to lack of inner light or awareness and occurs in conjunction with the withdrawal of energy in the lunar cycle. Similar periods of blindness occur when the Moon transits Virgo at 1 bindu, Capricorn at 2 bindus and Aquarius at 0 bindus. What compounds the problem is the steep and almost immediate climb from 0 bindus up to 8 bindus. Likewise, the fall from Cancer at 7 bindus to Virgo with only one bindu is likely to be another challenging time.

Normally, any transit at a level 2 is little more than an annoyance, although in this case, because the 2 period starts a major decline, its seriousness increases. This can be seen on March 7, 2013 when the transiting Moon was in Capricorn with only 2 bindus. Remember, the previous period was at 7 bindus. The rapid fall in mood from 7 down to a meager 2 resulted in Biebers Twitter rant about feeling unfairly treated by the media. During the next week, the Moon moved through Capricorn, dropping into Aquarius with only one bindu before it crawled into Pisces and the sharp incline to Aries at 7 bindus, and another Tweet followed which was described by all reports to be much the same as the earlier one.

As mentioned earlier, on January 23, 2014 while in Miami, Florida, Bieber was arrested on several counts, including an alleged drug violation along with drag racing and driving under the influence. At his court date, he was found guilty and placed on probation. At that time, the Moon was in Pisces heading up to Aries. The following week when he appeared in court in Toronto facing charges for battering a limousine driver on December 30, 2013, his Moon was in Scorpio at 6 bindus, and therefore, that night he was described as being quite buoyant and even over-confident. Biebers dramatic transiting Moon cycles reveal the constant flux of these kinds of emotional and behavioral extremes.

The next example is the chart of wild child Lindsay Lohan, a seriously talented but enormously controversial star who began her career as a child model and actress. Her irregular behavior has been fodder for the tabloids, and she herself has been quite outspoken about her unpleasant family feuds, public court battles, multiple stints in rehab and even jail, as well as her addictions to alcohol and drugs (mainly cocaine).

Below, Lindsay Lohans monthly mood cycle is shown.

Ms. Lohans lunar cycle indicates the likelihood of severe and prolonged mood swings which could explain her widely reported personal and professional conflicts and struggles.

As with Ms. Lohan, popular singer and television personality Britney Spears has also endured not only tremendous success but also gruelling media attention for her ostensibly erratic behavior, which many media sources have chalked up to drug or mental health problems. Ms. Spears has been called predictably unpredictable, though she has stated that her frequently reported outlandish deeds are simply a result of being country.

The graph below shows Britney Spears monthly lunar cycle:

As with the other illustrations, consistency of the dangerous sharp declines show just how seriously the withdrawal of regular energy will affect the way Ms. Spears sees and responds to the world.

Just as the above-mentioned celebrities seem to thrive on controversy, so too does the super-successful and acerbically opinionated American business tycoon, author and reality TV personality Donald Trump. Known as The Donald, he has built his brand on provocative and flashy behavior, and through the years he has become the king of outrageous and contentious statements. Yet sometimes he has been accused of going over the top, such as the time he drew strong criticism for his comments about vaccines and autism, and on many occasions when he has been accused of condescension and racism.

Trumps mood cycle shows him to be the least challenged of the four, in that he has only one dip. However it is an acute enough dip to reflect his tendency to go too far in making outlandish statements.

The ancient sages made it clear that the basic energy flowing from the Moon dictates how we see the world. The examples above support their teachings. It is important to recognize that the graphs shown above are not demonstrating anything bad about anyone. The graphs are merely demonstrating how fluctuating and misplaced consciousness can lead to turmoil in life.

Just because the lunar cycle will remain consistent throughout life does not mean one is powerless or subject to continued chaos as a result. Having knowledge and acceptance of the constant change of the energy flow provides an opportunity to stand back and evaluate situations. Such evaluation allows for conscious choices, as opposed to simply reacting like a leaf in a storm. Once these cycles are acknowledged and conscious decision-making takes place, lives become considerably smoother and frequently richer in all respects. The mere awareness of the lunar cycle is the first step, after which immediate support is available through the use of deep breathing or the use of music and mantras.

Research like this demonstrates the existence of a link between erratic moon cycles and generally ill-advised behavior within individuals who experience sharp swings in their lunar energy patterns. The Moons monthly cycle has a powerful influence on the choices all people make. Sadly, until we learn the importance of using active and conscious decision-making, we will continue to be unnecessarily subject to needless and often embarrassing suffering.
