Vedic New Year: Manmatha

By Barry Rosen

Happy New Year. The Vedic culture celebrates the New Year with the new moon in Pisces which was March 20th this year and happened to coincide with a vernal equinox. (Moon conjunct the Sun). This Vedic New Year concept is related to the apparent path of the sun which appears to be in direct motion but is actually slowly moving in retrograde motion through the sign of Pisces and eventually will get to Aquarius. It is celebrated as Yugadi, or the beginning of time, when Brahma started Creation. Wishing you a happy Ugadi and a prosperous, happy and fulfilling New Year! This year it also coincided with a solar eclipse which means a rather transformational year for the planet.

Quoting the meaning of the New Year, the great saint, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar said: "Time gives you both, bitter and sweet experiences. Dont think its only friends who bring sweetness, friends can also bring bitterness. And dont think enemies always bring bitterness, enemies can also bring some sweetness. So, life is a mixture of all the opposites. On New Year day, the tradition is to eat a little bit of neem leaves, which is very bitter, and jaggery, which is sweet. It is meant to imply that life is both, bitter and sweet; you have to swallow both, that is the message."

Each New Year is presided over by a different diety. This 2015 New Year is called Manmatha, which is connected to the deity, Kamadeva, a kind of Vedic cupid. In the Puranas, Kamadeva has a wife - Rati, the goddess of desire. He inspired Shiva with amorous thoughts of Parvati while he was engaged in penitential devotion, and for this offence the angry god reduced him to ashes by fire from his central eye. Shiva afterwards relented & allowed Kama to be born again as Pradyumna, son of Krishna & Rukmini, or Maya, 'delusion'. Kamadeva is the lord of the apsarases or heavenly nymphs.

The ancient texts say that people born during March 23, 1955 - April 10 1956 are said by the ancient scriptures to be handsome, delicate, sensuous, serene, amorous, and honored by society due to their serenity or modesty, social nature, balanced thoughts and wisdom and intelligence, discerning and wealthy. These are all Venetian qualities which makes us think that part of the theme for the year will center more on Venus, luxury, artistic expression, sensuality and maybe there holds some hope for social diplomacy between countries. With Venus in Aries in Ashwini in this New Years chart opposing Saturn and Venuss depositor Lord, Mars in Gandata (late degrees) in Pisces we wonder how smooth a year it will be?

The qualities of the coming year are connected with sensuality, Venus and pleasure. Last time we saw this year was 1955-56 when Nabokov's Lolita was published and Disneyland opened. In an earlier occurrence, 1895-96 Oscar Wilde was jailed for his homosexuality and then released a year later and Salome was published. Would think that it might be a great year for new artistic development and a new movement forward for gay rights and that a new level of sexual freedom and sensuality may move more into the forefront of society. Should also be a great year for artistic development and a banner year for filmmakers particularly for erotic movies.

Washington, D.C. Lunar New Year Chart. 5:36 am, March 20, 2015.

Capricorn rising with Saturn in the 11th and exalted in the Navamsha and aspecting his own house suggests support for the US and a year centering on good income and money and finance. Still somewhat troubled at times with Saturn being in an enemys house and its depositor, Mars being weak at the end of Pisces. Exalted Jupiter (but Retrograde) in the 7th good for relationships with the people of the country and at least existing more harmony toward their leader and country but still some emotional discord. The solar eclipse was not visible in the US and will not affect the US as much as Europe where it was more pronounced. Not happy also with the Mars affliction to the moon.

Mars is gandanta, or transitioning between the vulnerable and knotted area between 27 degrees Pisces a water sign and 3 degree Aries into a fire sign and is rather afflicted but at least posited in the 3rd house where malefics do better. Communications and 9th house religion, foreign affairs, legal matters will be afflicted to some degree. Still, benefic Jupiter aspects its own sign and the charts 3rd house so some of that will ultimately turn out well. The benefic "scissors yoga" (Shubha Ketari) with Mercury and Venus hemming in the 3rd house and troubled eclipse and Mars will also be supportive for an ultimately good outcome.

Mercury lord of the 9th in the 2nd will support income from foreign countries as well as Saturn's ownership of the 2nd. Mixed blessing with Mercurys dual ownership of the 6th suggests more accumulation of US debutbut what else is new.

The 5th lord Venus is well placed in the 4th house supporting the stock market and housing overall -- still with some bumps from the depositor Mars being Gandanta (see above) and conjunct Ketu. Ultimately later in the year when Mars is in Cancer and later conjunct Rahu, this may suggest further setbacks for housing and the stock markets later in the year.

Of course all of this in the context of the dashas with the US going from a Mars Mahadasha to a Rahu Mahadasha according to my rectified US chart with the Rahu period starting Dec. 2, 2015. Mars is trouble in this chart being with Ketu and changing signs between the edge of the watery Pisces into the fiery Aries and so continuation of troubled military involvement and probably unexpected terrorism could happen even through Jupiters retrograde aspect may bring some success.

So have a sweet year and realize that life is a co-existence of opposite values, some sweet and some bitter.
