The Jyotish Star – March 2017
by Vachaspati Christina Collins
Varshaphal (Varshaphala) comes from the Tajaka system of Astrology originating in Persia. An individual’s natal Varshaphal, or annual chart is set up as a solar return, or when the degree of the transiting Sun hits directly on the degree of the natal Sun. This chart does not stand alone, but is observed along with the natal chart, for a year’s view of important directions for the year ahead. The ascendant, and the planets that are in kendras (in the angles, 1, 4, 7 and 10) indicate the most potent focus for a given year. The Muntha or year lord, and the position of the planetary ruler of the ascendant are also important indications of the year ahead.
For a country or mundane view of what is in store for a given location, an Annual Chart is set up for the Capital of a Country at the exact time of the New Moon in Pisces every year. Note that this differs from the “solar return” of a country, when the transiting Sun hits the degree of the Country Sun. though many observe that chart as well, but very few countries have a without-a-doubt birth time.
Moon and Venus are ruled by Jupiter and Jupiter is weak in ShadBala (0.69%), is in an enemy sign (Mercury’s sign of Virgo) and in the 12th dustana. The dasa of 5 levels, Maha through Prana levels are all malefic Saturn/Rahu/Saturn/Saturn/Ketu – the planets of learning lessons (Saturn) and karma (Rahu and Ketu). The dispositor of Saturn is the weakened Jupiter (also weak because it is a functional malefic for a Libra rising chart.) the dispositor of Ketu is Saturn (whose dispositor is weak) and the dispositor of Rahu is the Sun. (whose dispositor is the weakened Jupiter.) this can also be read from the Chandra lagna or Moon chart. Then we see 5 planets in kendras Sun, Moon, Venus Jupiter and Saturn – with the conflict of Mercury and Mars in the 2nd house of “family life” and yes, Venus is exalted and in the first, which can “heal” a chart with the aspect of Jupiter, but it is lord of the 8th in the first, or ruler of a dustana house in the lagna which is challenged in itself.
The reason we use Pisces new Moon is because the Sun is in the actual sign or constellation of Pisces all the time. When we refer to the Sun an any given sign, we are talking about the “apparent” path of the Sun which is direct in motion. The actual Sun retrogrades from its position as it goes from age to age. The next time the Sun moves back a sign, it will move into Aquarius. Then we will have the age of Aquarius, while now we are in the age of Pisces.
For the USA Varshaphal chart the only planets that are angular are Mars in its own sign of Aries, and Mercury in enemy sign of Aries. This is lord of the 9th and 12th in a Maraka house (7). Four planets, Saturn, Sun,
Saturn in 3rd in Mula Nakshatra (Ketu’s Star)
Ketu in the 5th in Aquarius
Sun, Moon, and retrograde exalted Venus in the 6th house in Pisces
Mars in its own sign of Aries conjuct enemy Mercury in the 7th house
Rahu in the 11th (at least something’s good) 11th is the best house for Rahu
Jupiter in the 12th house in Virgo (an enemy house for Jupiter.
Libra is the lagna and he lord of the lagna, is exalted and retrograde in house 6. The 6th house is a mixed bag – meaning that it is both a dustana and an upachaya house. Now, we are okay if the 6th house realizes its ultimate purpose – to serve the dharma, but if the country and its leader(s) go adharma then it becomes the house of enemies. (enemies, litigation, illness, war)
When you use the derived house system, and take the 9th house as the lagna, and read all the planets from that point of view, you can see the dharma intention and what will aid you in performing right action, and what will detract you from that one-pointed focus of staying on the path of righteousness and correct action.
In childhood, the 6th house generally acts like a dustana, bringing onset of childhood illnesses, and having accidents like falling off your bike or getting injured. Once you are older and have progressed, then the 6th house becomes more of an upachaya in influence (Upachayas or houses 3, 6, 10 and 11 improve over time) as you begin to “serve” your dharma or life purpose. (the 6th house is always 10th from the 9th, or the “occupation” of the dharma, just as the 5th house is always 9th from the 9th – which explains why the 5th house is purva punya or past life credit.) So, we can look to the 5th house from the natal lagna to see the promise or future of the dharma, just as we look to the 5th to see what we have brought forth from the past to aid us in this incarnations quest for perfection of the self, by following the dharma, or intended life plan – our curriculum on this planet in any given lifetime. Yes, earth is school.
This dharma technique, can also be read in a mundane (Samhita) chart. For 2017 in the USA chart, we have Ketu in the 5th aspected by Rahu and Saturn. This indicates that karma will be expressed as a focus on freedom as the dispositor of Ketu in Aquarius is Saturn who aspects the Ketu by its 3rd aspect, rules the house it is in, and resides in the 11th house of gains from the position of Ketu.
What must happen in the USA is balance (Libra Rising) with its ruler Venus exalted in the 6th by staying on track in the dharma, and being in Service to others, which for the Sagittarius rising USA chart means the pursuit of happiness and freedom.
If the pattern goes the other way, we are looking at things like a new war with former allies (Venus, the planet of friends and wealth and love in the house of enemies), walls getting built around our country (Saturn, the planet of restriction, in the lagna of the USA chart) and unhappiness among ourselves.
So, my suggested solution would be to practice the old golden rule ‘Do unto others as you would have them do onto you’ when you come from a place of injustice, anger and resentment, take a moment, take a breath close your eyes and visualize yourself at peace, yourself free, and as they say in “The Secret” see it, feel it as already happening.
Once I heard my teacher Maharishi Mahesh Yogi say “the President or leader of a country is the reflection of the consciousness of the people, so if you want a “good” President, change the consciousness of the people, because it is the people that elect the President.”
Meditate, or learn to meditate. (I recommend TM which I began 48 years ago,) Stay as heart centered as possible. Love will also assist us in getting through this annual chart.) if we are at peace, our country can be affected by the group consciousness of this intention.
On that note, I also feel we should reexamine how we predict an outcome in an election and pay much more attention to the charts of the individual states that have the greater number of votes in the electoral college, and examine each of those state’s country charts and look at the poll closing in each state as transits to that state’s natal chart. I plan to do that myself. In November’s article, I did see Trump initially named the winner, but thought Clinton would ultimately win, and that it could flip. And that is what happened, he won the electoral college vote, and she won the popular vote.
What we should examine as we interpret the Varshaphal
- The country “natal” chart or origin chart of the country.
- The new moon in Pisces (exact degree of Sun and Moon in Pisces) chart with the location of the Capitol city, and country location of a specific country. (Washington, District of Columbia)
- The natal chart of the President, King, Queen or ruler of a country.
- The current transit chart of the President. (its dasas at the time of country Varshaphal
- The natal Varshaphal (solar return) of the President (its dasas at the time of country Varshaphal)
- The current solar return to the natal chart of the President. (you can also look at the Oath of Office chart when a President utters the first word after taking the oath – often “thank you.”)
- And finally, the natal and 2017 Varshaphal charts of the country in question’s allies.
Finally, because Saturn is such a player in the USA Varshaphal chart, as Yogakaraka for Libra rising, we should watch its transit throughout the year as it moves back and forth from Sagittarius to Scorpio and finally back into Sagittarius.
Saturn Key for 2017 at time of annual Varsh
March 27 Saturn Direct in Sagittarius at 3’37 Mula Nakshatra (Ketu star) ( began Jan. 27 until April 5)
April 6 Saturn retrogrades in Sagittarius
June 21 Saturn retrogrades into Scorpio
August 25 Saturn goes direct in Scorpio
August 27 Saturn goes direct in Sagittarius (this is the most difficult, when a planet (like Saturn) finally leaves the sign it has been in for the last time, and for Saturn, it will be 30 years before it returns to Scorpio)
For more in-depth understanding of Varshaphal, I Hope to see you all at UAC () next year in Chicago, where I will be teaching Varshaphal the annual chart and the Solar Return. (along with Astrological DNA Medical/Ayurvedic astrology.)
