The Sun in the Nakshatras - March

By Jyotidevi (Charlotte Benson)

Nakshatras are 13 degree and 20 minute sections of the familiar 30 degree signs of the Zodiac. This section is the area of the sky which the Moon travels over in a 24 hour period. These smaller parts of signs contain much ancient, and very specific, imbedded Truth.

Nakshatras are comprised of thousands of fixed stars, and they are associated with almost as many concepts! There are deities, planets, elemental qualities, gunas, ganas, animals, doshas, symbols, myths, sounds, castes, directions, etc. associated with each nakshatra. Knowing about the nakshatras of your Lagna (rising sign), Moon, and Sun can give you much information about your own hidden abilities, and motivations.

March begins with the Sun in Nakshatra # 24, Shatabishak, until March 4. This nakshatra spans 6 degrees and 40 minutes twenty degrees even, of Aquarius. Its (faint) marker star is Sadachbiya. (This Arabic named star sounds a lot like Shatabishak to me!)

There are several meanings to this complex star pattern. Shat is one hundred. Abhishak is healers. The Hundred Physicians is a reference to Shatabishak. But this also infers that there are many physicians needed for the proper healing of planets if they are struggling here.

There is a constant theme of the conflict between the demonic and the divine, light and dark. A tendency towards secrecy can create misunderstanding because of the intensity of these mixed messages.

A Hundred Flowers, is another symbol of Shatabishak. This makes reference to the opening of the 1000-Petaled Lotus, the crown chakra, when its energy is managed properly. An open circle is yet another symbol.

Varuna is Shatabishaks presiding deity. Varuna is one of the most ancient Vedic gods powerful Lord of the oceans, the Underworld, and the Night. Also, Varuna is said to be ruler of both the Law, and lawlessness. So - Rahu is perfectly suited as the planet assigned to rule this star pattern! And no wonder that there is such potential turmoil in this area, since it is ruled by both Saturn and Rahu. This planetary pairing may account for the strength of will which can transmute these turbulent souls into very dedicated, spiritually accomplished people. The great Indian sage, Valmiki, exemplifies this transformation. He began as a robber, and then evolved into becoming the writer of the great Indian epic, The Ramayana! Physician heal Thyself!

Dharma is the motivating factor for Shatabishak. The Ayurvedic dosha is Vata. This tendency towards nervousness, restlessness and mental stress needs careful management to avoid mental melt-down!

Shatabishaks animal is a sort of reverse Centaur, named Hayagriva. He has human body, with a horses head and is said to be the embodiment of knowledge.

On March 4, until March 17, our Sun moves through Nakshatra #25, Purva Bhadrapada, which covers 20 degrees of Aquarius to 3 degrees and 20 minutes of Pisces. Scheat and Markab are the marker stars, in the Great Square of Pegasus. Purva means first or former, and Bhadra means auspicious, beautiful, fortunate. Pada, as you probably know, means foot. A sword is one symbol for this nakshatra. This implies the ability to fight for an ideal, or to defend the weak. Two legs of a funeral cot is another symbol, said to represent the ultimate futility of striving only for material gains. In spite of this reference, the primary motivation of Purva Bhadrapada is Artha the drive and ability to accumulate worldly goods. This seems like a perfect melding of the dual influences on this star from its sign (Aquarius) ruler, Saturn, and its nakshatra ruler, Jupiter. Acquiring enough material support to enable spiritual growth is a special talent for Purva Bhadrapada!

Aja Ekapada, the One-Footed Goat is the exotic presiding deity of this nakshatra. According to Komilla, this deitys mysterious ability is that of being able to provide nourishment to all, and yet be completely self-sufficient. That refers to the spirituality and generosity of Purva Bhadra natives, who represent compassion, kindness and interest in justice.

The powerful, fierce and proud lion is the animal associated with this nakshatra, and shares its nature with it. Vata is the ayurvedic dosha of Purva Bhadrapada. Consistency could be well employed during this period.

Nakshatra #26, Uttara Bhadrapada, hosts our Sun from March 17 through the 30th. This star pattern spans 3 degrees and 20 minutes 16 degrees and 40 minutes of Pisces, and its marker stars are Pegasi and Andromeda. Uttara means latter, higher, or later. With its adjacent companion, the two Bhadrapadas are considered to be the scorching or flaming pair, and adds the other two legs of the funeral cot.

Twins, or a twin, or a two-headed man, is the symbol for this nakshatra. This implies many different layers of
dualism here: the sign ruler is Jupiter and the nakshatra ruler is Saturn, which creates an internal dichotomy, as in the previous nakshatra. It is about transition, and immortality; about sattva and about tamas; about spiritual detachment, and about worldly wealth. This is a very complex nakshatra, involving its resident planets with opposite aspects of human nature!

Uttara Bhadrapadas presiding deity (devata) is Ahir Budhnya, the serpent of the deep ocean. Serpents represent wisdom, and the deep ocean represents the unconscious/superconscious. The animal associated with Uttara Bhadrapada is the sacred, loving, giving, honored cow. Pitta is the ayurvedic dosha of this star. Through dynamic action much can be accomplished during this nakshatra period.
