October 1st to October 31st 2016
|by Vachaspati Christina Collins|
October begins with the Sun in Virgo conjunct Jupiter. Normally these best friends do quite well in conjunction. We lose a little “oomph” as they transit between malefics Rahu (in Leo) and Saturn in its enemy Mars’ sign of Scorpio, as Saturn casts its uncomfortable glance or drishti to Rahu. So this conjunction can’t quite reach its normal heights of excellence.
The transiting Sun, now for the next few months will be in the enclosure of Kala Sarpa yoga. Kala Sarpa – Time and Snake – a name which describes (name and form) the movement of Rahu (head of the serpent) and Ketu (body of the Serpent) as they retrograde (appear to be moving backward in time) in exact degree motion moving degree by degree until they reach 00°00 degrees (in an equal house system) and jointly move back into 29°29 degrees of the next sign. They transit just after midpoint in at 18°33 in Leo and Aquarius. Mars will break the kala sarpa yoga in December on the 26th at 8:23:20 EDT. So this is an advanced heads up for those celebrating or travelling or making plans now for travelling during the Christmas holiday, that just prior to this time Mars and Ketu will be in exact degree conjunction in Aquarius, an air sign (and the Moon with be debilitated conjuct Saturn in Scorpio and that moon will be 11°07 and the Mars, Rahu and Ketu will all be at 11°19. I would not make travel plans for the Sunday Christmas Day the 25th especially later in the afternoon, or evening at night by plane.
The Sun represents the Soul, the father, the life force and vitality. So, from the moment the Sun moved beyond the degree of Rahu into late Leo until Mars breaks past the degree of Ketu in Aquarius these signs will both feel restricted while at the same time offering the opportunity for spiritual focus and growth. Especially as this several month transit of the Suns will also feel the influence of Saturn, the planet who slowly and patiently gives the opportunity to experience life lessons. (sade sati of the Sun)
Added to this will be the fact that the Libra, Scorpio and Sagittarius signs, and Sun in those signs (natal and by transit) are also experiencing Surya sade sati. (the 7 and ˝ years it takes for Saturn to transit from the 12th house of the Sun, through the house where the Sun is posited into the 2nd house from the Sun). there are actually 4 different sade sati’s that we observe. Simply sade sati refers to the transit around the natal Moon. Surya sade sati, the transit of Saturn to the natal Sun, Lagna sadi sati, the transit of Saturn about the Lagna, and Lagnesh sadi sati – Saturn transiting, 12th, 1st and 2nd from the planet that rules the rising sign. Once the Sun (always direct in motion) moves beyond Ketu on February 23, 2017 – we will experience more comfortable transits.
Even though some will go through very difficult times, (and I like to quote Maharishi Mahesh Yogi here – “see the job, do the job, stay out of the suffering”) know that it will be 30 years before you experience the same transit. Even then, Jupiter will be transiting somewhere else (in 2045 and 2046 Jupiter will be in Aquarius and Pisces) which can lessen or increase the Surya Sade Sati effect. Any time Saturn transits through a sign, Saturn, the planet of focus gives us a 2 to3 year opportunity to focus in on the experiences of a particular house, and to learn from those experiences – so it can help to just view it as school, and finishing school presents many rewards!
Venus transits through her own sign of Libra now, and when the Lagna or Moon is Aries, Cancer Libra or Capricorn we will have a Malavya yoga which is great for artistic, literary and financial pursuits. Mercury begins the month conjunct Rahu which can “muddy” the mind and cause the intellect to be slow and confused, but will change to exaltation which will take the edge off of the transiting Rahu while the Sun is in Virgo (because the dispositor of Rahu, the Sun will be conjunct an exalted planet (Mercury) which improves the nature of the transiting Rahu, almost, but not quite as it was when benefic Jupiter was still transiting with Rahu the last year.) Saturn of course continues in Scorpio until late January of next year and Mars is in the sign of friend Jupiter finally getting away from its arch enemy house guest Saturn in Scorpio to Sagittarius then exalts at the very end of the month in Capricorn.
October 1 New Moon in Virgo
October 2 Mercury moves at 15:32:24 to 29 degrees of Leo – this sandi is not as difficult as other changing of sign movements of Mercury as it is ever closer to its own sign of exaltation in Virgo – further Mercury is exchanging signs with the Sun (parivartana yoga) another positive factor.
October 3 Mercury moves to Virgo and exaltation, joining Jupiter and the Sun, and creating a more benefic Rahu, as Sun, Rahu in Leo’s dispositor -- now transits with an exalted planet, Mercury, and also the dispositor of the transiting Virgo Sun.
October 8 Saturn aspects Rahu by exact degree. This is pretty malefic, as Rahu acts likes who it is with, the ruler of the sign it is posited in, or absorbs the influence of Saturn. Some saving grace or relief is the fact that the ruler of Rahu, the Sun, transits with an exalted planet (Mercury) and Mercury is not yet combusting the Sun. – still whatever house Leo is for you in your chart, take care in the matters pertaining to that house. Stretch doing some yoga before heavy exercise as Leo rules the Lumbar spine (and the heart)
October 12 Venus becomes sandi at 29’00 Virgo (at 10:27:31 MDT) at the end of its transit in Libra.
October 13 Venus moves to join Saturn in Scorpio. Also notice that the Moon has now moved past the degree of Ketu so we can now use the next two weeks for good muhurtas as the Moon has left the restricting influence of Kala Sarpa yoga.
October 16 Full Moon in Pisces at 00:23 am, then the sun become sandi at 29 Virgo at 20:51. Then the Sun moves signs to debilitation in Libra.
October 20 Mercury becomes weak at 29’00 Virgo
October 21 Mercury moves to join the Sun in Libra.
October 25 the party’s over – the two-week period of the Moon’s transit cancelling the Kala Sarpa yoga ends, as the Moon moves past the degree of Rahu falling back into the Kala Sarpa. Now we have a week of Kala Sarpa continuing until Mars exalts in Scorpio on the 31st cancelling this difficult Kala Sarpa yoga.
October 30 Mars moves into 29’00 of Sagittarius as it moves towards exaltation. And new Moon occurs in Libra. Because Saturn is the yoga karaka planet for the sign Libra, this sade sati can prove to not be so bad, just check Binashtakavarga for the strength of the Sun transiting 12th from Saturn.
October 31 Mars moves into exaltation in Capricorn, lifting the debilitated Moon in place at the time (a bit) Neecha (debilitation) Banga (cancellation) Raja (king) Yoga (union) - in this case occurs because the ruler of the debilitated planet is transiting exalted. Of course, they are both transiting at zero degrees when first occurring which will detract a bit from the strength. Additionally, even though Saturn has moved a few degrees from the degree of Rahu it is still in “orb” of influence, and now Rahu receives not only the aspect from Saturn but also the intense 8th aspect from Mars. Leos be gentle with yourselves and cautious. Balance pitta. (Mars hits Rahu by exact degree on November 21st on the Monday before Thanksgiving for those of you in the United States – so this is a heads up for planning your travel if you are having a destination Thanksgiving event)
I will be teaching Transits and Dasas at the upcoming ISAR conference in California!) 9:00 am on Friday morning the 14th of October! Hope to see many of you attend this awesome conference! (did I mention it is near the Ocean and 11 miles from Disneyland?
