Planetary Tips

October 1st to October 31st 2014

by Vachaspati Christina Collins

We begin October with the Sun in Virgo at 13°50 degrees. Venus continues neecha in Virgo, though debilitation is cancelled for the first couple of days of October while the Moon resides in Sagittarius. (A debilitated (neecha) planet is cancelled (neecha banga) when it resides in an angle from the rising sign or Moon). Some astrologers also feel it is neecha banga from the Sun (in an angle from the Sun) as well. Some also feel that the parivartana yoga of Venus and Mercury lifts the Venus out of debilitation. (And it will be cancelled by the conjunction of Mercury when it retrogrades back into exaltation in Virgo on October 15th)

The nodes, Rahu in Virgo - Chitra (Mars star) and Ketu in Pisces - Revati (Mercurys star) continue their retrograde (they are always retrograde, just as the Sun and Moon are always direct) motion.

At 25°14 each (the nodes always transit in the same degree) reside Ketu in Pisces and Rahu in Virgo. We have our 2nd and final set of eclipses for 2014 coming this month, a total lunar eclipse on October 8th and a partial solar eclipse on October 23rd. Jupiter continues in Cancer in exaltation in Mercurys star Ashlesha, and Mercury is conjunct Saturn in Libra. Mars continues in its own sign of Scorpio in Jyestha, also Mercurys Star.

So, if you know a bit about planetary friendships there are basically, friends, neutrals and enemies. One set of friends is Jupiter, Mars, Sun and Moon (and Ketu who acts like Mars) the other set of friends is Venus, Saturn and Mercury (and Rahu who acts like Saturn). Basically, Mars and Venus are neutrals and Jupiter and Saturn are neutrals. When a planet changes nakshatra, the flavor of influence changes and takes on a bit of the energy of the planet involved. Planets are stronger when they transit through a star or sign that they own. For example Jupiter was stronger when it transited through Punarvasu in Cancer, then it is now in Mercurys star of Ashlesha.

October 3 Venus moves to Hasta nakshatra

October 5 Mercury goes retrograde in Libra

Mercury Key:
Mercury goes Rx in Libra on October 5th
Mercury moves Rx into 29°00 Virgo on October 16th
Mercury goes Direct in Virgo on October 25th
Mercury moves to Libra on November 4th

October 7 Moon moves into Pisces conjunct Ketu

October 8 When Moon in Pisces reaches the degree of the Sun in Virgo we have our full Moon. The exact full moon occurs a few minutes prior to the eclipse

October 8 Total Lunar Eclipse. Viewable in the USA for the first portion, before Moonset. Duration will be from 4:17 am until 9:32 am. A lot of the potential negativity from this eclipse will be mitigated because the ruler of the Rahu, Mercury will be in parivartana with Venus and retrograding back towards its sign of exaltation and Jupiter the ruler of the totally eclipsed moon will be exalted, aspecting its own sign of Pisces and aspecting the moon (as well as Ketu) from the 5th (from the Chandra lagna) by its 9th trine from Cancer.

Depending upon a specific city or countrys chart an eclipse can bring earthquakes, hurricanes, and tsunamis when the transit occurs in the earth and water signs. (Presently, Rahu resides in Virgo, earth and Ketu in Pisces water.) Generally speaking many earthquakes occur when planets are sandi zero or 29 degrees and when Mars aspects Saturn (or Saturn aspects Mars) in planetary war, especially when Mars is in an earth sign. During the eclipse Saturn and Mars will both be strong in both charts. Saturn exalted in Libra and in Gemini in Navamsa (both air signs) and Mars in own sign of Scorpio and exalted in Capricorn in Navamsa. Because Mars in Scorpio (water sign) with Mars in navamsa of Capricorn (earth) in Navamsa occurs during the eclipse there will definitely be some earth disaster danger under this eclipse.

Full Moon October 8, 2014. 6:51 am

Total Eclipse, October 8, 2014 6:55 am (at maximum)

The total eclipse will be visible in several major US cities:

Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington DC, New York, Honolulu.
Other locations for total visibility:
Beijing, Brisbane, Guatemala, Havana, Tokyo, Hanoi, Hong Kong, Manila Mexico City, Melbourne, Montreal, Queensland, Quebec, Jakarta, and Sydney.
A partial eclipse will be viewable in parts of South America, and India (New Delhi). (After moonrise, or sunset).

Having said this, a reminder that it is not considered a good idea to go outside to look at an eclipse energetically. Pregnant women are advised to stay indoors with the curtains drawn. (I have had several clients lose pregnancies during eclipses. Rahu rules miscarriages and Rahu and Ketu are the shadow planets (Upa grahas) that are the eclipses. )

The lunar eclipse will run from 4:17am to 9:32 am for Washington D.C.

The (Penumbral) eclipse begins at 4:17 am, the Partial eclipse at 5:18 am, total eclipse begins at 6:27 am - maximum will be at 6:55 am the entire penumbral eclipse ends at 9:32 am. (though visability ends in Washington DC around 7:13 am once the Moon has set.)

October 12 Rahu, Ketu, and Sun will all be 25°10 degrees and Mars will be 25°53. That is four malefics exact or close to exact by degree. This occurs on a Sunday, so be careful driving or returning from weekend getaways. Because at the same time, Jupiter exalted will be aspecting Mars in its own sign, and Moon exalted in Taurus will also be aspecting Mars with the only check being Saturn aspecting the Jupiter and balancing it a bit the blindness of Rahu with the Sun, along with many exalted planets, may make some feel invincible and fearless from danger taking unnecessary risks and endangering themselves others. So watch out for the other driver, in other words be aware, of yourself and the surrounding environment.

October 15 Mercury retrogrades into sandi state at 00°59 Libra.

October 16 Mercury retrogrades back into 29°00 sandi Virgo, returning to exaltation, though not strong until it reaches a degree of arc 20 hours later. The good news is now that Mercury is exalted in an angle from debilitated Venus in Virgo, the debilitation of Virgo is cancelled!

Mercury moves back into exaltation 3:40:39 am EDT:

Most people feel planets are weak at zero or 29 degrees (changing signs in a 30 degree equal house system), and many feel 2 degrees on either side are weak in other words, 28, 29 and 0 2. The downside to this particular transition is that when Mercury retrogrades back into sandi Virgo at 29, the Sun will also be Sandi at 28°48 as it moves towards debilitation at zero Libra.

October 16 Sun moves into 29°00, sandi in Virgo at 8:28:29 am EDT.

October 16 10°16°12 Mars goes Sandi at 29°00 as it moves from its own sign of Scorpio to Sagittarius.

Twenty hours after Mercury goes into Virgo again, Mercury Rx will have a degree of arc at 29°00 and become stronger, with more improvement once it is 28 degrees.

Also on October 16th there is a nice Hamsa yoga of Jupiter conjunct Cancer Moon which will last a couple of days.

(Hundreds of yogas, or combinations of planets exist. There are five great yogas where each of the following planets are exalted or in an angle Jupiter, Mercury, Mars, Venus and Saturn each from one of these yogas)

Hamsa is the highest of the five Pancha Maha Purusha Yogas, when Jupiter transits exalted, or in its own sign of Sagittarius or Pisces, and is in an angle from the lagna or the Moon. When Moon resides in its own sign of Cancer conjunct the exalted Jupiter it is considered one of the highest forms of Hamsa yoga. Hamsa was a spiritual swan with the ability to draw out cream from milk, and leave the milk behind. This yoga grants wisdom to the incarnating soul and often produces yogis saints and spiritual teachers. Many astrologers are born with Hamsa. The Hamsa we are discussing here (and I have his permission to teach with his chart) is in the chart of Vachaspati Dennis Harness, PhD (Dayananda Saraswati) who has Moon and Jupiter in Cancer in the 12th house of moksha!

I am also blessed to have a Hamsa yoga with Jupiter in Sagittarius and Moon in Pisces. This combination will focus more on the career of teaching and counselling. I imagine I will write many books in the next decade. (Moon dasa is 10 years long).

These yogas activate when running the dasa of the planets forming the yoga, i.e. Jupiter or Moon. In Moon dasa Dayananda had dramatically expansive spiritual gains. I just entered Moon dasa and my Hamsa yoga is finally activated by time period. (So Ill keep you posted!).

October 17 Sun moves to 00°00 Libra

October 18 Venus goes Sandi at 29°00 as it ends debilitation in Virgo.

Venus moves to Sandi Virgo at 3:57:31 EDT

October 18 Mars moves to 00°00 Sagittarius and Venus moves to 00°00 Libra at 23:08:01

Mars moves to Sagittarius at 4:19 am EDT

Venus moves to Libra at 23:08:01 pm EDT

October 20 Mercury will be the same degree as Rahu and Ketu at 25°13 even though this exalted Mercury lifts up the nature of Rahu, it still does not make for clear thinking.

October 22 Jupiter will be the same degree as Rahu and Ketu at 25°14 with Ketu and Jupiter in exact mutual aspect. With the Moon conjunct exalted Mercury (both at 23 degrees, and both in the Mars nakshatra of Chitra) it will be a spiritual, kundalini charged kind of day. Meant in a manic sense. Rahu, Mercury, Moon, Venus, Sun, will all be in Mars ruled Chitra and Ketu (plus Uranus if you are counting outer planets) and Jupiter will all be in nakshatras ruled by Mercury. (Saturn will be in Jupiters star). Mars rules the 8th house (Aries) from Virgo, and Mercury rules the 6th house from Aries I think that this will be a very tricky and difficult transit day. Add to this that the classic conjunction for mental illness is Mercury/Moon/ and Rahu in the 6th house be particularly careful when Aries is rising in your location. (This will place the Virgo combination in house 6). Fortunately Chitra is a positive creative star for music, mathematics, singing and painting (it falls in both Virgo and Libra) so take the time to be creative this day. Meaningful conversation with others may be lacking.

October 23 Partial solar eclipse. It is partial because it is happening at sunset (or sunrise in other countries). Even though partial, it will make a big splash here in the west, as it will be viewable in North America. Mostly from Canada, but Chicago and Minneapolis should be able to view it. You will need to have clear sight from north/northwest direction for viewing (through a device!!! Only)

Partial solar eclipse
Begins 5:53pm MDT
Moon will just touch the edge of the Sun.

You can see that when it begins, the Sun and Moon will be at 6°19 degrees of Libra, and Rahu will be at 25°14 Virgo which is 11 degrees apart. This in a lay way explains the word partial a total eclipse of the sun is where the degrees are all the same, Sun, Moon, Rahu and Ketu.

Maximum at 6:17pm EDT
You may need to be higher (top of building, etc.) in order to view it, as the Sun will be setting just as the Moon reaches close to the middle of the Sun.

Ends at 7:43pm EDT. (Although viewing will end at 6:17 as the Sun sets the energetic will continue for a bit.)

Important! Do Not Look Directly At The Sun, -- with naked eyes, sunglasses through a telescope or with binoculars!!!! It could burn your retinas and cause blindness. You can go online and make a light box for viewing on a table or sidewalk, (go online for directions) or watch it online (safest). Here is a link I found for making a Sun viewer: http://www.exploratorium.edu/eclipse/how.html

When we were young, our father made us one using a shoe box and a mirror.

Solar eclipses effect mundane changes in the world. This eclipse will be more mild in effect however the next solar eclipse in the spring of 2015 (March 20th) will be total and have much more dire effects. Notably, as it will be an eclipse of the Sun in annual new Moon in Pisces - varshapal charts.

October 24 Saturn will go sandi at 29°00 Libra as it leaves exaltation for Scorpio (November 2)

October 25 Mercury goes direct in exaltation in Virgo. Also note that Venus will be combust the Sun at 8 degrees and will continue for 3 days (at 9 degrees, then 10 degrees) not great for love or money, especially as a sandi Saturn forms a sadi sati with the moon during these few days.

October 31 Rahu, Mercury, Moon and Ketu will all be around the same degree at 25. Plus, Venus will be combust the Sun. Saturn is 2 days from leaving exaltation, and it wont be back for 30 years. Even though it will retrograde in Scorpio, it will go direct before it can retrograde back into Libra. So appreciate it while you can!!! Its almost over!
