Jyotish Star January 2014 Planetary Tips by Christina Collins

We begin January with the Sun and New Moon in Sagittarius. Although the word new brings us to the mind of new beginnings, especially on New Years Day still we consider a New Moon, a weak Moon as it is combust the Sun. Also, the Moon (at midnight as we ring in the New Year) will be in Mula nakshatra, which gives a Ketu Dasa to this first chart of 2014 (in Washington D.C.)

The actual New Moon occurs a few hours later. Of course the close degree opposition of Jupiter to the Sun and Moon improves this New Moon Day. A house strengthens when it is aspected by its ruler. Venus continues in retrograde motion in Capricorn (where it is yogkaraka for the sign) in its parivartana yoga with exalted Saturn in Libra. (Exchange of houses) This parivartana will continue for some time as Venus moves from Saturn ruled Capricorn and continues transiting in Saturn ruled Aquarius (except for a brief retrograde into Sag for a couple of weeks) until April. Mars continues in its lengthy journey in Virgo to Libra then retrograding back to Virgo then forward in direct motion again to Libra which will continue until autumn. This Mars transit may prove very difficult for those with placements or planets in the signs of Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces, and Aries when Mars is in Virgo, and Libra, Capricorn, Aries and Taurus when Mars transits Libra. When a planet aspects a sign it owns, it strengthens the house. So the difficulties are less for the sign Aries, even though from Virgo Mars throws its 8th aspect. Both challenges and opportunities will come for Scorpio placements/lagnas. As Mars rules Scorpio, when it transits the 11th house in Virgo, it will be preferable to the 12th house transit in Libra especially as it hits the degree of the exalted Saturn sitting in Libra.

January 1 We begin with the New Moon in Sagittarius. A new Moon is always a conjunction of the Sun and Moon. The 4th aspect of Mars will fall between this new Moon and the transiting Mercury. If you have natal Mercury around 16 or 17 degrees in Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces or Aries, you will be susceptible to colds and winter flu. Get more rest and stay warm if you are in winter climates.

January 2 Mars will aspect the Sun both at 18 degrees.

January 4 Venus will go sandi in its retrograde motion at 00°29 take care in travel for the next 3 days.

January 6 Venus retrogrades back to 29° of Sagittarius. Venus is the karaka (significator) for vehicles, so both the 4th, 5th and 6th of January should be observed as take care when travelling especially in mountainous areas as Venus leaves Capricorn for the unfriendly fire sign of Sagittarius. (Venus rules earth (Taurus) and air (Libra) even though fire and air signs are compatible, Venus, retrograde and sandi and aspected by Mars and Saturn (though wide by degree) is still not stable. It has also left its good parivartana yoga with exalted Saturn in Libra, where they exchange houses with each other, and instead is left with just the aspect of strong Saturn.

January 7 Venus retrogrades back into Sagittarius. Mercury becomes sandi at 29° Sagittarius.

January 8 Mercury moves to Capricorn where it is more at home in a friends sign. It also is losing the negative aspect of Mars, the toughest enemy of Mercury.

January 11 Venus in Retrograde motion moves back towards the Sun, the Sun who is always in direct motion (the apparent path of the Sun) reaches exact combustion today. This should be a take it easy day, especially as the transiting Saturn will aspect both by degree. All three at 27 degrees. And, when this occurs the transiting Mars will be at 22 degrees aspecting the 22 degree ascendant (timed for Washington DC) and of course also this conjunction, by 5 degrees within an 8 degree orb of influence.

This is a Saturday. Be careful around fire. Slow down. Dont plan parties or celebrations if you can postpone them.

January 13 Sun becomes sandi at 29°00 of Sagittarius and a few hours later, we have another full moon (see chart below this first one) when the moon is sandi at 00 degrees of Gemini and the Sun is sandi at 29 Sagittarius. Fortunately this happens early in the morning on a Monday. If you are driving back from a weekend trip or flying, best to not travel this day.

January 14 Makara Sankranti which is when the Sun first enters Capricorn. In India it celebrates the beginning of spring and the Suns movement leaving the tropic of Capricorn as it transits in towards the northern hemisphere going from darkness towards more and more light.

To Hindus, the Sun stands for knowledge, spiritual light and wisdom. Makara Sankranti signifies that we should turn away from the darkness of delusion in which we live, and begin to enjoy a new life with bright light within us to shine brighter and brighter. We should gradually begin to grow in purity, wisdom and knowledge even as the Sun does from the Day of Makara Sankranti. From Wikipedia.

January 15, 2014 Full Moon in Cancer. This will be sweet in that the full moon falls in its own sign of Cancer. It should be very nice, as Jupiter and Venus, though both in retrograde motion are still in mutual aspect, and Mars from Virgo aspects Venus within a degree. Nice for romance.

January 17 The transiting Jupiter in its own star of Punarvasu moves retrograde back to Ardra Nakshatra, the star of Rahu. Jupiter is more negative here although the fact that Venus is opposite and in Purva Ashada the star of Venus this combo could produce some financial windfalls for some charts. One, because Purva Ashada is known natally to give wealth to an individual, and Ardra nakshatra who is ruled by Rahu brings us a Jupiter/Rahu connection. When natal Jupiter aspects natal Rahu in a chart this increases material gains (and can decrease spiritual gains). Chakrapani calls this yoga Kodanda Rahu or big Rahu and I have seen it over the years in natal charts to produce individual wealth.

It is always a good idea at the beginning of the year to consult with your personal astrologer to see how these general planetary tips influence your own chart specifically! And just an aside, I would book now, as many astrologers are increasing their fees in January of 2014.

January 25 Mercury reaches 29 degrees of Capricorn. Moon will be debilitated in Scorpio. Mercury rules the intellect and Moon the mind or consciousness. This is a day to avoid big decision making.

January 26 Mercury moves to 00° of Aquarius.

January 29 Mars and Saturn will be the same degree. They will be in a 2/12 axis and though not a vedic aspect or dristi, still this is a type of planetary war. My grandfather called this the trigger effect. He was a western sidereal astrologer. He taught me that whenever any transiting planet hit the degree of another transiting planet (or a natal planet for that matter) that there would be an effect of some kind like pulling a trigger, or flipping a switch.

January 30 New Moon. We began the month with a new Moon in Sagittarius. We end the month with a 2nd new Moon. This is a relatively rare occurrence. When a new moon occurs, the sky is relatively dark. This is called a black moon when a second new moon occurs in the same month. (a second full moon is called a blue moon). Some groups, notably witchcraft confer great import to this phenomenon. Astrologically, it defines similar to any new moon. The moon is combust the Sun, which means loss of power.

January 31 Mars becomes sandi in Virgo. It will move into zero Libra on February 4th. Venus goes direct in Sagittarius at 19°29. Then it will move back into parivartana yoga with Saturn on February 26th passing through Capricorn and Aquarius until April 27th when it moves into exaltation in Pisces.

The eclipses this year will be in April and October. We will be writing about this in detail.

Mars will transit between Virgo and Libra direct and retrograde then direct in motion until September 5th of 2014 when Mars moves to Scorpio.

Saturn and Venus will continue in Parivartana yoga as Venus travels through Capricorn and Aquarius. This ends when Venus moves to Pisces its sign of exaltation on April 27th 2014

Jupiter will move to its exaltation sign of Cancer on June 18th 2014

Rahu and Ketu who stay in a sign for about 18 months and are always retrograde in motion, move from Aries/Libra to Pisces/Virgo on July 13th, 2014

Saturn will move to Scorpio on November 2nd of 2014.

Wishing you all a happy and prosperous 2014!! So many changes. The major Vedic planets, Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu will all change signs this year!
