Recognizing Powerful Yogas

by Nalini

Many yogas exist -- connections between planets, houses, and signs- which bring good luck in the areas of life each indicate. Such yogas include:

  1. raja-yogas, or the connection between the ruler of a quadrant and the ruler of a trine.

  2. pancha-mahapurusa yogas, or five specific planetary placements related to Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, Mars, and Saturn.

  3. dhana-yogas for wealth.

  4. kartari-yogas caused by planets surrounding the Ascendant, Sun and Moon.

  5. yogas caused by planets in the tenth house from the Moon; as well as numerous other possible combinations.
This discussion is about specific circumstances, to which I have given the name Maha-yogas. Without doubt, the best houses in a horoscope are houses 1, 9, 10, (if the 10th ruler is a friend of the Ascendant lord or is the yoga karaka) and 5 (in that order). When the rulers of these houses have a combined effect on a particular house and sign, their benefic powers are multiplied substantially. We can understand the strength of the combination according to the number and strength of the benefic influences involved.

For example, if the rulers of 1 and 5 are together in the fifth house, aspected by the ninth lord, which is placed in the tenth house - then all four benefic houses are concentrated in influence (upon the fifth house, in this
case). This is a MAHA-yoga of the highest degree. If the yoga has three of these four influences, it can be understood as very potent. If two of the four benefic lords congregate, it is still strong. And if there is one link such as the ninth lord in the tenth, without the influence of the first or fifth lords, then the person will get some of the benefic power transferred to the tenth house.

My initial observation of any chart begins with the placement of the Ascendant lord. Then I like to see where the ninth lord blesses the chart. If neither of these factors is strong, the fifth and tenth lords themselves can create an auspicious situation in life. You will rarely see a true maha-yoga, where the first, fifth, ninth, and tenth lords simultaneously influence a place. That yoga is even stronger if they influence the first, fifth, ninth, or tenth house, of course, since these are the most benefic places in a chart.

If you overlook this simultaneous influence, even by aspects, you will miss areas of life where your client can prosper. Judge the strength of such combinations, naturally, according to their placement in the signs of friendly planets, according to their exaltation or own sign position, and according to their being subject to the influence of malefic planets. It is rare that a relatively weak raja-yoga can create great success, reputation, wealth, religion whatever house is strengthened in a persons life. But if you see such raja or MAHA yogas influencing a certain place in a chart, it is always good to encourage your client to pursue those areas of life.

Take as examples, three charts of Cancer lagna people----Sting, Pres. Bush Jr., and Celine Dion. You can quickly identify the combined influences of the rulers of 1, 5, 9 and 10. In Stings case, he entered the mahadasha of Jupiter after going through Rahu in the 8th house. Naturally, that is a big improvement of his fortune; but unless you notice the aspects of Moon, lord of lagna, and Mars, lords of 5 and 10, to his Jupiter, you might not anticipate that his good Jupiter mahadasha will make him world famous, very rich, the father of several children, etc.

I have found that if the Ascendant lord is well-placed, but the ninth house of good fortune is afflicted, the person does not get proportionate good fortune in their lives; or though born into an opportune situation, they choose the wrong path in life, or suffer in circumstances beyond their control (Fate).

Another consideration is that if there are maha-yogas, but the Ascendant is covered by evil planets, or these most important houses (1, 5, 9 and 10) are disturbed, they will use their strengths or powers in evil ways. Most of us do not have benefic or malefic planets in totally concentrated form; we have mixed karmas, or more often, karma on the slightly malefic side. It is, after all, Kali-yuga.

There are also aristha-yogas, or yogas for misfortune; and if there is a simultaneous influence of the 6th, 8th and 12th house operational, the troubles the person faces will be severe. Adolf Hitler, for example, has the 6th, 8th and 12th lords influencing his lagna or lagnesh. Pres. Bushs chart also has such influences; therefore his career had its highs and lows. My current Mercury-Sun period also connects the 6th, 8th and 12th houses.

As in the positive examples, the more the influence of the malefics is concentrated upon one place or planet, the more that place suffers. If one of the factors hits it, there is pain which can be surmounted. If two hit, then there is a greater struggle; and if three all hit, the difficulties are rarely surmounted or are inevitable.

Although this principle is simple, I did not immediately look for such confluences in at least the first twenty years of my practice. Hopefully this will serve as a reminder to some of our readers!

Thanks and be well, Nalini

Nalini Kanta Das Biography:

Nalini Kanta Das was born Tom Hopke in New Jersey (and with his permission to state his data) on Jan. 20, 1951 (Capricorn Ascendant).

Nalini actively became a searcher of knowledge and spiritual truth in the late 1960s, leading him to an investigation of all things India. He joined the Hare Krishna organization and the Bhakti path in 1971, spending seven years spiritually focused in the ashram.

Nalini began consulting Vedic astrologers in 1977 regarding his future, and this led to his serious study, practice and pursuit of the science of Jyotisha (Vedic Astrology). His first book, How To Read Your Horoscope, was published in 1986. He developed an international clientele beginning in the 1980s to the present. Joined and began teaching with the American Council of Vedic Astrology, and the American College of Vedic Astrology (ACVA) in the early 1990s, Nalini now presents seminars worldwide. He started his own spiritual center in Florida in 1992. He now offers Vedic retreats for yoga, spirituality and Ayurveda. He divides the majority of his time between the United States and India, having made over fifty (50!) pilgrimages to India, often taking people with him on tour. Nalini became a serious student of the Divine Bhrigu-Samhita in 1989.

Words about Bhrigu from Nalini... ( an excerpt the entire text can be read at http://nalinikanta.com/index.php/the-divine-bhrgu-samhita.html )

Maharishi Bhrigu is an eternal personal associate of Lord Krishna, a guru of many great personalities such as the Pandavas, and a progenitor of mankind. His spiritual abode is hinted at by Sri Sanatana Goswami, who says that the bhajan (worship) there is indescribable, and by the Srimad-Bhagavatam, which describes Bhrigujis home as worshipable even for the saints who are transcendentally situated (Bhag. 2.2.25). My guru, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, mentioned in his scriptural translations that any gentleman must be interested in astrology, and that the perfection of astrology is found in Bhrgu-samhita.

The book, spoken for the many whom He saw hearing His words over the next thousands of years, was carved in stone in the Himalayas. Two thousand years ago, those words were written down on papers, which are kept with great care in Hoshiarpur in the state of Punjab in Northern India. A saintly lady named Sneha Amrtanand lives there and translates the words of Bhrigu for us
