Jyotish Star of the Month

Marc Boney

By Vachaspati Christina Collins
Interview Date: 10/20/1216

Christina Collins: Marc, thank you so much for taking the time to interview with us today! We know you are so busy with your private Jyotish consulting practice and your Pacific Institute of Vedic Science!

Marc Boney: Thank you for inviting me, Christina, it is good to re-connect with you.

Christina: Yes, very nice – I think the last time we met was about 20 years ago! Marc, what initially attracted you to Astrology? Were you always Vedic or did you also explore Tropical astrology?

Marc: I was very immersed in Western Tropical astrology for 20 years before discovering the Vedic system, and at first I was not at all impressed, especially given that purists did not use the outer planets, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. It appeared to me initially as rather medieval. That all changed in
November 1993 when I met K.N. Rao. He demonstrated the predictive power of the system with its yogas and dashas. When I saw the validity of these and how with this system you could reliably predict such events at marriage, child birth, career rise etc., I was hooked.

Christina: I know what you mean! Also, I knew you are a fan and student of K.N. Rao (as am I!) do you spend time in India working with him?

Marc: Yes, I maintain contact with him. I am an adjunct faculty member of his Institute of Astrology, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in New Delhi, India. Each year the Institute holds an International Program, where I have presented in recent years. The Institute also publishes a Journal of Astrology that regularly features my articles. I always tell my students that my astrology is just a pale imitation of K.N. Rao's and any proficiency that I've developed in Jyotisha is because of him. I feel very blessed to have had him as my teacher and mentor now for some 23 years.

Christina: Blessed indeed! Tell us, are there any other astrologers in your family?

Marc: No, I am quite the "black sheep" in this way. I was raised in a very traditional Catholic family that put a high value on education and mainstream career pursuits. When I was first getting into astrology in my early 20s it was a source of surprise and bewilderment to my family and friends at the time.

Christina: We share a history with TM (Transcendental Meditation), I learned in 1968 and taught in the 70’s and 80’s. not only have you worked with Maharishi, but you also worked with Jyotish for Deepak Chopra in San Diego for several years, didn’t you?

Marc: Yes, both Deepak and I moved to the San Diego, California area in the early 1990's and later when he established the Chopra Center for Well-Being in La Jolla, I was invited to establish a program in Vedic Astrology and I taught there for several years.

Christina: And now you have founded your own Pacific Institute of Vedic Science in San Diego. Unique in that you offer not only Jyotisha studies but also Yoga and Ayurveda. You must be very busy! Do you have any programs coming up in the near future that we can tell our readers about?

Marc: Locally I do regularly teach aspects of Yoga and Ayurveda, but my primary focus internationally is as a teacher and author of Jyotisha.

The Jaimini system within Vedic astrology is something of a specialty of K.N Rao's and I have followed in his footsteps this way. Over the past year I have been offering online courses on Jaimini and will continue to do so. I have a monthly article subscription program, and a weekly video subscription program on Graha Yogas. These are aimed at students who have already learned the basics of Vedic Astrology. I also have a mentorship program for those who would
like to be tutored individually which is open to students at all levels.

In early 2017 I plan to launch Jyotisha University, a two-year online curriculum program modeled after K.N. Rao's school in India, and which will be an affiliate of his.

Christina: Yes, I would call that very busy! And how wonderful to hear of your ongoing success! You are also writing books that will soon be coming out. What topics have you chosen, and when do you think they will be released?

Marc: I have written a book entitled The Essentials of Jaimini which should be out before the end of the year, and currently I am writing a book on Graha Yogas that I intend to publish in a series of volumes starting next year. Currently there are 25 articles ranging from 30 to 100 pages on a wide variety of topics within Jyotisha that are available on Amazon.com or through my web-site (www.marcboney.com)

Christina: You have a Master’s degree in counseling psychology if I remember correctly? Do you integrate that science with the science of Jyotisha in your consultations?

Marc: I certainly think my background and training in counseling psychology has been of value both to me and those who consult with me astrologically. It is my personal opinion that anyone who intends to do astrology professionally and consult with people about their charts should seek out such training. At the same time, I recognize that some people are just innately empathic and good counselors.

Christina: I agree that you are fortunate to have a counselling background, it really helps when coaching others! I understand that your first teacher, Goswami Kriyananda gave you your first astrology reading, and predicted that you would become an astrologer! What are the astrological signatures in your chart that indicate astrology as a profession?

Marc: In the Western Tropical system it has a lot to do with Uranus closely conjunct the Mid-Heaven, and in a sextile relationship with a conjunction of Mars-Mercury in the 8th house. From the Vedic standpoint, the lord of the 1st and the 10th in the 8th house of the occult sciences with the 8th lord is a part of it. A strong Jupiter involved in Vrinchi Yoga is another. I met K.N. Rao and became immersed in Jyotisha shortly after I entered my Jupiter Maha Dasha. [editor’s note Vrinchi Yoga is when the ruler of the 5th, Jupiter and Saturn are all well placed, either in angles (kendras), trikonas (trines), in exaltation, own sign or friends sign. This yoga is a name for Lord Brahma, the creator and when present in a chart gives intelligence and creativity.]

Christina: Yes, not only Vrinchi with Saturn, lord of the 5th in the 1st and Jupiter in its own sign of Pisces in a kendra but this yoga strengthens as Saturn and Jupiter aspect each other, and Jupiter is in the Pancha Maha Purusha Yoga of Hamsa, the yoga of discrimination. In addition, your Ketu aspects Mercury and I often see a Mercury/Ketu association of some kind in the charts of great astrologers, either by drishti or by nakshatra lordship. Beautiful chart! I often see the close conjunction of a good Mars with Mercury gives a quick and speedy mind and many great astrologers have this placement as well!

You also studied the work of Carl Jung. You know, when I was in Bangalore at the home of Dr. B.V. Raman in 1996 (Shri Raoji had recommended me for the title Jyotish Vachaspati and I was there for the All India Conference to receive it) and Dr. Raman told us about his friendship with Carl Jung. He showed us a letter all protected in plastic covers that Dr. Jung had sent to him, I believe in 1947. I will try to find a copy of it somewhere – have you seen it before?

Marc: Yes, when studying Jung's work and reading biographies of him, as well as a collection of his personal letters, I became aware of his interest and use of astrology, and his correspondence with Dr. Raman.

Christina: That is very cool, that you were exposed to Raman in your studies of psychology – before you became an astrologer! Thank you so much Marc for giving us a little of your time today, it has been a pleasure to talk with you again!

Marc: My pleasure :-)
