Jyotish Star's 2015 recipient for the title Jyotish Vashista

Interview with Joni Patry of Dallas, Texas

By Christina Collins of Boulder, Colorado
Interview Date: 12/07/2014

Christina Collins: Joni, Congratulations on receiving the 2015 Jyotish Vashista title! As you know, there is only one recipient per year, and you are truly deserving! So, lets begin by telling our readers all of the many different projects you have completed in the past year, which resulted in the accolade of your Jyotish Vashista title. Youve written several new books, done consultations in Japan and the Middle East, Turkey specifically and somehow balance that with raising a family of three sons!

Would you start by telling us how you got started giving Jyotish sessions in Japan? Youve had a strong presence there for years, havent you?

Joni PatryJoni Patry: I was a presenter at UAC (United Astrology Conference) in Denver in 2008 when a newscaster approached me for an interview on the current US elections and the conference. I gave my interview and after walking away I received a number of calls from my friends back home in Dallas exclaiming I just saw you on Fox News! Really! I thought it was a local news station. Then I got a call from Japan for this was televised internationally. They wanted to make my own website. From that point on I began to write predictions monthly for the Japan audience, and completed A Lesson on Vedic Astrology. I have been writing for them for over six years. I made a very poignant prediction for the month of March 2011 warning of a devastating earthquake. I regret to say it was accurate, but I did receive many
e-mails from my readers who thanked me, for they postponed events such as wedding plans due to my prediction.

Christina: Thats really fascinating! Do you speak Japanese as well?

Joni: I wish! No I have my interpreter Yoshie. All these years. The Japanese have been incredibly gracious and honorable. They are a joy to work with. The website has a phone app now and has many Japanese follows that also live in Dallas who contact me. I have a loyal readership.

I also write a monthly column in the international online magazine Saptarishi. This goes out to over 120 counties worldwide. They have published two of my recent books.

And of course I write my monthly Spiritual Insights for by website www.galacticcenter.org . In my Spiritual Insights I glean my insights through all my travels working around the world and relate this all to the present astrological aspects and events current during the month. Also I reveal some of my daily predictions but save the in-depth version for my readers that join and subscribe to our Astrologic Magazine. Our new magazine was first introduced to bring together a community of astrologers and metaphysical groups. We publish new authors and post any new events or conferences for free.

Christina: You also travel frequently to work with people in the Middle East. Where do you usually go and how did you connect with people there?

Joni: One of my favorite places to go is Istanbul, Turkey. I go there twice a year. I have really gotten to know the culture through understanding the Turks through reading their charts. It is fascinating to really see the lives of other cultures through exploring their horoscopes and lives. My clients there are predominantly professionals -- doctors, lawyers, politicians, movie and soap opera stars, even Miss Universe. All of them inquire about their spiritual lives and have mystical experiences. Their culture is steeped in mysticism and shamanism. They are trained to read the coffee grounds in a cup of Turkish coffee. While there I work really hard, I do from 8-10 readings in a day. And most Turkish people do not know what time they are born so I have gotten really good at rectifying a chart in about 5 minutes. They know within an hour of birth so there are usually two ascendant signs to choose from. The spiritual center where I teach is the oldest and the largest in Istanbul. While there I teach an intensive class. There is an interpreter so I have to stop after a few sentences and wait for the interpretation. It really takes patience because right when you have a concept and idea you are getting through you have stop and hold that thought for the next few sentences. But the students are very smart and learn fast. They take this very seriously because astrology is a much esteemed profession, and gives the ability to make a living like other professional careers. I am scheduled to go back to Turkey to teach in January of 2015. I will go to Antalya, a beautiful coastal resort for 5 days to do readings and back to Istanbul to teach and do more readings.

My 2015 predictions was the opening speech at a holistic healing International conference and my articles are published in the magazine Faces and the newspapers. Plus I was a guest on one the most popular talk shows, Saba. http://www.bilgipaylasim.org/wp/

Christina: I know that you are on the road speaking much of the time, and you do radio and TV appearances as well, dont you?

Joni: Last year I traveled to a different NCGR (National Council for Geocosmic Research) organization and other groups to teach throughout the USA. I was in South Florida, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Diego, San Francisco, Sacramento, Seattle and even Kolkata, India between my visits to Istanbul, Turkey. I absolutely love meeting new people with the same love of astrology throughout the world.

Yes, I am a regular on the local ABC channel here in Dallas called Good Morning Texas. They bring me in every couple of months to give my world
predictions and the personal predictions for the signs.

Christina: I know you have a You Tube channel with quite a following!

Joni: Yes my YouTube channel is Get Astrologi Now. I was prompted by others to get a YouTube channel after a number of interviews on KRS channel with astrologer Kapiel Raaj. He has done a great job of getting the word out on Vedic astrology. On my YouTube channel I began with the world predictions for 2014 and received around 100,000 views. With many of my predictions coming true, I know I will be dong another forecast for the new year of 2015.

I also do monthly predictions concerning the aspects of the current planetary energies. Lately I have mini lessons with my students interviewed asking questions concerning specific insights in Vedic astrology. These come out weekly.

Christina: Wonderful, and Kapiel is not the only one getting the world familiar with Vedic astrology we applaud you as well!

Would you like also like to tell us a little bit about your own family there in Dallas?

Joni Patry and familyJoni: Love to! I have been married for 33 years to my high school sweetheart and we have three incredible sons, Christian 29, Preston 25, and Austin 19. They are all so connected and loving. There is not a day that goes by that I dont talk to each of them on the phone. My oldest son lives in Midland, Texas and runs an oil company, Cimarron Oil and my second son runs his office in West Virginia. My youngest goes to Texas Christian University, TCU in Forth Worth, Texas, where he is perusing business and works during the summers at Cimarron Oil, but he is torn by his love of
creating movies. He won the film awards in high school. My two oldest sons are engaged to be married. Christian will be married in April 2015, and Preston in January 2016. I am so excited to have a growing family!

My husband is thinking about taking on managing my career full time. Astrology has gotten to be a multifaceted and detailed business and is appreciated and supported by my entire family.

Amongst all the readings my serious students are pushing me to have a formal education and school. I plan to pursue my school this year with videos and online webinars.

Christina: How wonderful that everyone is doing so well! So, you juggle a family, travel the world, and still have time to write new books!

We know about your first very well received book, Eastern Astrology for Western Minds: A Compilation of NeoVedic Astrology, could you tell us a little bit about your newest published book, How to Make Money Using Astrology: Discovering your Luck and Fortune? Is the new book geared towards the practicing astrologer, the public and how they can take advantage of using astrology for financial success or both?

Joni: Actually I have a number of books that have come out over the years. My first book came out in 2004. While teaching at my center in the 1990s I had an array of classes weekly and after putting together so many handouts I decided to compile all my classes and handouts into a book, and there was born my workbook and text book, Eastern Astrology for Western Minds. I was in need of something that that explained Vedic astrology for our Western minds.

As a spiritual teacher using symbols and signs I wrote my book Awaken to the Power Within You and a second one called Answers. These books I use to help many of my clients but did not actually publish them in paper or hardback, for they have over 300 colored pictures used as oracles and the cost was not reasonable.

In 2008 when the stock market crashed I had so many people in desperation about their financial concerns I decided to write a book about money. And my book How to Make Money Using Astrology was born. This book takes into account the cycles of Jupiter and Saturn and Rahu/Ketu as to the trends in the cycles of money globally and personally. It also explores astrology in the stock market along with lottery winners. I actually stumbled upon a way to predict the wins in sporting events through understanding these cycles. This book is also translated in Turkish.

My love of how the Universe works with numbers and mathematics came through understanding the houses in astrology and my book Astrology the Divine Order of the Universe was born. This came out last June. In this book I explore the houses as in Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha. I look at the how the houses represent all aspects of our lives and how our lives are intertwined though others. It looks at the rulers of each house placed in all 12 houses and also the transiting planets in all the houses.

Christina: Wonderful!

Joni: But I am not finished! I just completed another book I am very proud of, The Secrets of Prediction. This is due out soon this year (editors note in 2014). In this book the first part is autobiographical describing how I got into astrology at a very early age and how I came to be a Vedic astrologer in Dallas, Texas. It is divided into two parts -- the first part is about making world predictions using the aspects and the outer planets. Many of my predictions concerning world events before they happened are described. The second part involves my techniques to make personal predictions. The lives of the entire Kennedy clan are analyzed as examples. The book begins with my initial awakening on November 21, 1963 when I saw astrologer Jeane Dixon on our black and white television beg President Kennedy to not come to Dallas or he would be assassinated. Then the next day the unthinkable occurred. I was 7 years old and it was what initiated my desire to learn prediction. By the end of the book I come to conclude that President Kennedy could have listened to Jeane Dixon. This is why astrology is so important.

Christina: Would you please tell us all about your new E-magazine and how our readers at the Jyotish Star can pay to subscribe? I know you have great articles and many contributors!

Joni: Yes, you can go to the website where we just began the new E-magazine Astrologic Magazine, or www.astrologicmagazine.com last May. Its only $49.99 a year, or $4.99 a month. In this magazine we have many metaphysical articles that range many topics -- from astrology, yoga, essential oils, health, to spirituality. I write monthly columns for Whos in the News, Spiritual Insights, Predictions and aspects for the month, Stock of the month, Ask Joni and excerpts from my books in Vedic Lesson and Awaken to the Power within You and Answers. Also there is a movie and book suggestion each month. We have monthly columns from wonderful Vedic astrologers, Lynn Bootes, biographies, Barry Rosen financial news, Alan Annand Stars in the Stars. Plus amazing articles from yourself, Christina Collins, and Juliana Swanson, Edith Hathaway, Dennis Harness, Dennis Flaherty, Kenneth Johnson, Nalini Kanta Das, Ernst Wilhelm, Gayatri Devi Vasudev, Robert Koch, Jay Boyle and many more. Plus there is an article Wisdom from the Masters, which are some of the greats who have since passed on. I think our magazine is beautiful and full of amazing information. I am very proud and excited to bring this production to the world of seekers of metaphysical and astrological information monthly. It is very entertaining.

Christina: Any other projects on the horizon?

Joni: Yes, one more project I am working on as we speak is that I am helping well-known Australian film director Bill Bennett produce a film on following our intuition. He contacted me last month as he was in India shooting this film and a Vedic astrologer told him his destiny and fortune would come to fruition if he came to where the cosmic rays were best for him, Dallas, Texas. So to be true to his intentions for this movie he came to Dallas, Texas! Meanwhile, he googled Dallas, Texas Vedic astrologer and guess who came up! So he has been here in Dallas filming. He is bringing forth the concept of Vedic astrology in his film interviewing me, and many of my connections. Bill and I have become very close friends for we both have our moons in Purva Phalguni nakshatra. I believe he will put Vedic astrology on the map. I also connected him to majorly influential and very wealthy people who will make this all possible.

Christina: Would you give our student readers, and recent graduates from ACVA (American College for Vedic Astrology) and CVA (Council for Vedic Astrology) advice on how best to practice astrology as full time professional consultants?

Joni: From my meager beginnings in the early 1990s I had classes that had one to three people in them. It was very disheartening but my love and passion for Vedic astrology keep me going. It appeared there was no way I would ever make any money to sustain my family at this rate, but I kept it up. I didnt quit my regular job, as a flight attendant. I would travel for 3 days and teach my classes and do readings on my 4 days off. I never had a day off, and I still never have a day off, but I love what I do so it never feels like work. I now do readings 6 days a week and my only day off is on Sunday and I write most all the day. The one thing that really influenced my business the most was something my oldest son Christian told me. He told me never decline any opportunity to speak or go anywhere to teach and reach out to others. He said do you think Deepak Chopra ever declined any speaking engagements? I do remember seeing Deepak Chopra at our little Unity church speak in the 80s and a book signing in 2004 at a small Borders books. So no, he did it all. So I did too. I began to get pockets of students and clients all over the USA and now all over the world.

And to remember that there is no better teacher than practicing your craft. The more readings you do the better you get and you learn something new from every reading you do. Reading a how to manual never teaches you as much as the true practice. Get into the trenches and practice, plus it teaches you how to deal with and counsel people. You have to be compassionate and have a true love of people and humanity. With more practice you will learn this. I tell my students not to be dependent on me for the best teacher is to practice, practice, and practice more. Some the best ways to practice is to work fairs where you are on the spot and have to do readings one after the other without studying the chart. This is the best training. You have to size up a chart instantly. OMG I forgot about working all those psychic fairs in the distant past!

My thriving practice didnt come over night or from not working. I used to write astrological columns for all kinds of publications, most not paying anything. But it gave me great practice, I spoke anywhere and for anyone, never getting paid. Like anything else, you have to pay your dues and work as hard as you can. Every ounce of effort you put out will be returned in equal force. This is the law of the Universe. For me, I was gifted at a very early age to know exactly what I wanted to do with my life. Believe it or not I always wanted to be an astrologer. And now I couldnt be happier with my career and my future. I passionately love astrology and still get really excited when I learn something new that works in my practice. This keeps me young and enjoying my life to love what I do everyday. And most of all the fact that so many people give back with the statement Thank you Joni, you have changed my life, thank you for what you do. This makes it all worthwhile for nothing empowers us more as an astrologer than to empower other people. This is what I believe astrology is for.

Christina: Thank you so much for interview with us today Joni, and congratulations again on your new title Jyotish Vashista!

Joni: Thank you for such an honor! To be appreciated by my great peers such as you, is so meaningful. Sometimes we rarely stop to realize what we have accomplished. We just keep going and creating. So this means so much to me, Thank you, Christina.
