Jyotish of Disasters
Fires - Earthquakes

By Christina Collins

When pursuing the study of Mundane astrology, which includes the charts of leaders, nations and balance, it is vital to understand and consider the 27 constellations called Nakshatras. The nakshatras (also called lunar mansions, constellations, or merely stars,) circle the zodiac of the twelve constellations that we are already familiar with Aries through Pisces.

Each nakshatra consists of four parts or padas. Pada means little foot. They reside in the distance behind each astrological sign. Additionally each nakshatra not only has a meaning, but also a ruler or governor. For example at the beginning of Aries and further away in the background is the constellation of Ashwini ruled by Ketu. Next in Aries is Bharani, ruled by Venus and then Krittika who is ruled by the Sun, and so forth.

So you can see that with Vedic astrology and the use of these 27 stars who each contribute a further flavor of influence. Each sign has 9 padas. The actual degree in which a planet is posited becomes very important, as you will have three very different results depending upon the specific nakshatra in play. Mars ruled Aries thus receives the additional flavor of Ketu in Ashwini, the flavor of Venus in Bharani and the flavor of the Sun in Krittika. This also is how the Vimshottari dasa, or time period of birth is determined. Your Moons nakshatra or birth star for instance, if Ashwini or the first part of Aries, means you begin life in Ketu dasa. Further, each sign does not contain a full nakshatra. Krittika for example has its 4th pada in
Taurus! And, here also we have two very different flavors of Krittika. One influence, the hot fire sign of Aries and the last part the cooler, grounded earth sign of Taurus.

When we examine the charts of disasters, the nakshatra is very important for learning and understanding. Additionally when predicting these disasters, based upon study and research we can determine, when specific nakshatras are inhabited by various planets we can expect to see a replay of challenging times, or harmony and status quo..

Mrigashira who influences at the end of Taurus and the beginning of Gemini is often a culprit connected to fires, especially fires in forests. Ardra nakshatra, who is wholly contained in the sign Gemini when expanded by the presence of Jupiter, brings high winds and explosions. Then, depending upon the conditions of other planets, when Jupiter moves to Punarvasu (its own star, each of the 9 planets own three nakshatras) results macrocosmically become more balanced.

Below is an example chart of an earthquake of 5.1 which occurred in 2002 in Plattsburgh, New York.

Rahu and Saturn conjunction in 2002 was in the earth sign of Taurus, conjunct Mars in Mrigashira and then, Jupiter transited in Gemini in Ardra nakshatra. Keep in mind that Nakshatras are just one planetary factor around disasters. The conjunction or aspect of Mars, with either Saturn or Rahu, and in this case both are often in play. Any planet that is sandi and in this case Venus is leaving at 29°51 as it leaves Krittika Aries for earth Krittika Taurus.

Also of note is the exchange of Nakshatras. Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Neptune are all in Stars ruled by the Moon, and the Moon transits in Pushya, Saturns star, receiving the 10th aspect of Saturn from Libra. And of course Jupiter, a maraka as lord of the 7th is in the 1st with the challenging conjunction of the great malefic Mars with Saturn and Rahu who are in the 12th house.

A common transit that brings disasters such as fires and earthquakes is when Mars is strong and in or aspecting the earth signs. Mercury, the most unstable planetary influence usually factors in as well especially when it is sandi at zero degrees. This example has a strong Mars in Aries aspecting Mercury in the Navamsa.

I chose the above example because of the similar, though not exact combination which is current in 2013. Right now, twelve years later Jupiter has returned to Gemini and Ardra Nakshatra (on June 29th and a couple of weeks from now, at this writing).

Greece began to rock and roll a bit on June 16th, and just as the Sun changed signs, and still sandi at 00°37 Gemini we see a 6.2 earthquake on Crete. Similarly Jupiter is in Gemini, and we have another Rahu/Saturn conjunction, this time in the 6th house from the multi planet conjunction (stellium) in Gemini, and of course in the 12th dustanas house from the Scorpio Lagna. Note that Mars is in Taurus, an earth sign, and just as in the 2002 chart resides in Rohini. Also of note is the degree of Mars in 2013s chart. Mars at 16°42 throws its close by degree 8th aspect at Pluto in 16°38 Sagittarius (and in Jupiters sign).

It is this research that convinces me of the importance of the outer planets especially in Mundane work, and likely in natal, individual work. This particular chart has all of the outer planets, along with the exalted Saturn between the karmic nodes of Rahu and Ketu. Even lordships become important to research. In this last example all of the lordships go to either a maraka house (7 in this case) or a dustana (6, 8 or 12). Also take note of derived houses. In the 2002 chart example many lordships when to house 11. (Eleven is 6th from the 6th).

The Black Forest Fire of Colorado Springs is another example of the combination of Mrigashira nakshatra and Rohini. Fire disasters are more difficult to construct the charts, as we have the time the call was called in to the Fire departments, but not necessarily the exact time of a lightning strike or arsonist ignition of a fire. What we have on record is that the calls came in reporting the fire between 1 and 2 pm on June 11th 2013. Because of my prior research I believe it likely began around 12:20pm because the Moon was still weak and sandi at 00° of Cancer in a house with low (18) ashtakavarga points. Fiery plants Sun and Mars were both in an earth sign, and both with great strength in Shad Bala. The Sun and Jupiter both in Mrigashira (the nakshatra of Mars and Mars is strong). Additionally Venus is in Ardra (the star of Rahu and is aspected by Rahu from Libra by 9th trine aspect).

The different meanings of Mriga are Deer, Beast and Forrest. Mrigashira is associated with seeking and trail blazing. The nama (name) sounds of the 4 padas of Mrigashira are Ve, Vo, Ka and Ki. (Colorado begins with the sound KA)

On June 14th just as rain began to help the fire, lightning ignited more outbreaks of the fire which has been named the biggest fire disaster in the history of Colorado. This time the instability was the Sun transiting out of Mrigashira/Taurus and changing signs and padas into Mrigashira/Gemini

Mrigashira is a soft star belonging to the Farmer caste, now we will observe as Jupiter first, then Mars and Sun move to Ardra (a sharp star belonging to the Butcher caste.)
