A Conversation with Vedic Astrologer Niranjan Babu Bangalore |
| By Charlotte Benson Interview Date: 8/07/11 Jyothi Devi (Charlotte Benson):Thank you for taking the time to talk with us about your practice of Jyotish. How did you become interested in the Vastu Shastra?
During the early nineties, a chapter in father�s book (Muhurtha or Electional Astrology), related to various muhurthas covering different stages of construction caught my attention. In particular, I found the information on Vastu Shastra related to house building fascinating and had significant utility value. This Chapter covered various aspects of Vastu Shastra and clearly indicated its application was vital and very necessary for the welfare and prosperity of the owner. At that time, I noticed that a significant number of Vastu Shastra professionals were not fully versed about many significant technical aspects of Vastu Shastra. I began to have regular conversations on Vastu Shastra with father and they became question and answer sessions. Father patiently answered my questions and that cleared any lingering doubts I had on Vastu Purusha, Panchabhootas, Mandalas etc. He introduced me to rare authoritative books on the subject and asked me go through them in detail and diligently. He encouraged me at every stage to study the texts and would tell me that these principles should not be applied verbatim but as relevant to the modern conditions of living and habitation. He also said the origin of both Astrology and Vastu Shastra were the Vedas (as were Yoga, Ayurveda, Vedanta, Mantra Sastra, Tantra Sastra and other such sciences) and they were all inter-related and inter-dependent. The First All India Vastu Shastra Conference was conducted under the overall direction of my father and it was a privilege and honor for me to participate in a leadership role. Our efforts resulted in many hundreds of delegates attending from all over India. I feel, the extraordinary success of the Conference was the primary catalyst for bringing the benefits of Vastu Shastra to the attention of leading architects, engineer, builders and public-at-large. The rest, as they say, is history. Jyothi Devi: And what an amazing way to bring your history into the present! I�m sure that your illustrious father would be very proud of how you�ve put your diligent studies into practice. You have served as a Vastu consultant for various temples, all over the world. What is it in your rasi chart that contributes to your success in this unusual field? Niranjan Babu: Ascendant lord Venus is in the 4th house along with Ketu, Gnana Karaka. Saturn is the Karma-Dharma Adipati or the 9th and 10th lord and he is with 4th lord, the Sun in the 5th house. The aspect of 11th Lord Jupiter on the 4th lord Sun is a welcome feature in the horoscope. Seers and Sages (masters of Vedic Astrology) have indicated that free will or individual effort is the catalyst for effectively energizing the specific indications shown in a horoscope. I am fortunate that I had father as my Guru and also the opportunity during my earlier study and training to talk to many scholars of Vedas, Vastu and Vedic Astrology. Jyothi Devi: Those beautiful features in your chart explain many of the blessings you�ve experienced in your life and career. You had such a great guru in your father, who exposed you to all the different facets of Vedic Science. Is it necessary to know a lot about muhurta to make Vastu designs more effective? Niranjan Babu: Muhurtha is time management. As my revered father Dr. Raman says, a proper Muhurtha supplements the Vastu aspects of a construction. The mysterious influence of time (Kalapurusha) can account for the welfare of an edifice (Vastu Purusha). Time managed properly based on the compatibility of the natal and transit constellations for different types of habitation � residential, business or corporate � can indeed minimize the imbalances and optimize the strengths of a habitation. Several stages of construction � inducing fertility into soil, laying the foundation, creating the water sources, fixing the door (and window) frames, fixing the main door and of course entry into the new house (and more) are the time management tools that are necessary and significant. Construction started during certain lunar months can create impediments that contribute to unnecessary delay in the construction process. Jyothi Devi: Do your clients give you feedback regarding the effects of your Vastu recommendations? Can you give us an example of how these directional changes have improved a client�s life? Sometimes small changes in one�s environment can bring dramatic results. Niranjan Babu: Yes. I have had many clients tell me of the excellent results that they have achieved after certain changes in terms of orientation, habitation and relocation have been done. Given below are sample comments extracted from the letters received from clients. When I showed Niranjan Babu the diagram, he quickly made a recommendation. �Your shrine�, he said �is facing a wrong direction�. If you simply change it to the other side of the house, your luck will improve. Needless to say, the first thing I did when I returned to the USA was to change my shrine to the opposite side of the house. Believe it or not, my luck did improve� in the following months I had better success in almost every area of my life. "Guruji, I was in a very bad situation before I met you. My company had not received any orders, and there was huge inventory pile up. I made the changes that you suggested. Things have changed 180 degrees. My company is now profitable and we recently got our first international order" - "Sir, after taking guidance from you, my financial situation changed for the better. I have started my own company, and with your blessings, doing very well" � the new environment you helped me create in my home � I feel there is more flow in my life and my home and I are working as a team� I am enjoying the feeling of being more in tune and aligned with the universe�s energy and elements. "Sir, at first I did not believe in Vastu. When I met you, I could feel the strong positive vibrations and immediately decided to consult you. After 3 years, I am proud to say that my company has grown like a banyan tree and we have opened branches in Mumbai and Ahmedabad. Thank you very much Sir. I am indebted to you" "Sadar Pranams Guruji, I have made the changes you had suggested, and installed the Yantras you have given. My mother is now out of depression, and my wife has regained her confidence. I am grateful to you" "Sir, you are truly a divine personality. You have changed my life and I have come out of my troubles." Having redesigned my office and home guided by the vastu suggestions you�ve made � the results have been dramatic! The positive results on my business and personal life have left me amazed. "Sir, Our financial wing has opened 6 new branches this year and the entire credit should go to you." Jyothi Devi:Those are really remarkable and dramatic testimonials of the power of Vastu, and of your ability to implement it to improve your clients� daily lives. That is so wonderful that your work with Vastu is helping so many. In June of 2009 you launched The Astrological eMagazine, continuing the work of your late, great, father, Dr. B.V. Raman. Is your public adapting to the electronic format of this venerable magazine? How can we subscribe? Niranjan Babu: Yes. I am happy to continue the magazine that was started in 1985 by my great grandfather Prof. B. Suryanarayana Rao. My father Dr. B. V Raman became its Editor in 1936. On a personal note, congratulations to your family on your son�s recent marriage! Have your children expressed interest or abilities in following your illustrious family�s metaphysical dharma? Niranjan Babu: Yes, very much. My children Raman Suprajarama and Raman Siddhartha are very well academically qualified and are involved in the cutting edge of high technology. They have keen interest in Astrology, Vastu and other aspects of Indian culture. Many feel that my father Dr. B. V. Raman�s astrological blood has seeped deep into Raman Suprajarama. He has been a regular contributor to our magazine. He has written an article on Obesity and Remedies in the latest issue of our magazine (April 2011 issue). He has covered in the article, the application of Astrology, Yoga and Vastu for helping those who have obesity problems.. Jyothi Devi:Your American readers, especially, will benefit from this article. Your many wonderful books on Vastu are modern classics in this field. Apart from publishing The Astrological eMagazine, do you have any other books in process? Would you care to share with us, any plans for the future? Niranjan Babu: My books on different aspects of Vastu (interfacing Astrology) are now available in English and several regional languages of India that include Kannada and Malayalam. I have been writing for our magazine and other print and online media for a long time. Based on my study and research, I continually introduce different aspects of Vastu/Astrology as relevant to today�s challenging and changed living and habitation conditions across the globe. I am also in the process of getting several rare Sanskrit books on Vastu translated with notes and practical examples to make it easy to follow for the current and future generations. I am just back from the USA and UK where I was specially invited to offer professional services to a world-wide renowned Vedic group. I also gave several lectures and seminars that included a lecture/seminar at the Sivananda Yoga Institute, Los Angeles. Mr. Bill Levacy, President, American College of Vedic Astrology was very instrumental in arranging this lecture. He and his wife Ms. Peggy took excellent care of my wife Umarani and me.
