A Conversation with Astrologer Dennis Harness, Ph.D.By Charlotte BensonInterview Date: 2/10/10 Charlotte Benson: Thanks for giving me some time to catch-up with you. How have you been keeping busy lately, since you retired from the presidency of the American College of Vedic Astrology?
Charlotte: Thats a great title! So who are your students these days? Who is finding you? Dennis: Many are coming from the Yoga, and from the Ayurvedic communities. Charlotte: That makes sense. Theyre already interested in the Vedic sciences, so theyre coming to you for Jyotish the Eye of the Vedas. And you like the classroom teaching experience? Dennis: Yes. Thats what I enjoy. I do refer students to the on-line program its really great, and really thorough, to have that resource available, as well. Some of the students need the direct connection with the teacher, as well as the on-line format. So its kind of a nice balance. The state of the art, I think, would be a blended program. Which is what ACVA is doing with the webinars. Where theres some live teaching going on, along with the on-line teaching program. (editors note www.acvaonline.com) Charlotte: Thats the combination that I like, too. Some live, and some on-line. What do you think about the current planetary weather? Its a little harsh out there lately, isnt it? Dennis: I really been watching Mars, and Saturn, retrogrades- what kind of energy thats been creating in the world. Im looking forward to Mars getting out of Cancer, and into Leo! Charlotte: Arent we all! Where will your travels be taking you this year? Dennis: Ill be teaching at Dennis Flahertys conference, in Washington, in June. And Ill be taking a group of people to Egypt, in October through Ancient Oracle Tours. Charlotte: Its my dream to go to Egypt with you and Demetra George this year. Charlotte: What else is new? Dennis: Ive just revised my website, www.dennisharness.com . Theres a lecture there, which I gave on The Panchanga. And a number of articles there that you can download for free. Charlotte: I use your great book, The Nakshatras, every day in my own practice. Is that still in print? Dennis: Yes. You can order it through my website, or through www.amazon.com. Charlotte: Back to the current planetary patterns what have your clients been asking you about lately? Dennis: Id say that it has been a difficult time for relationships. Its been a real challenge with Mars retrograde in Cancer, and Saturn retrograde. Its written in the shastras that when two malefic planets are retrograde at the same time, its just not so great for mundane affairs. So were still under that influence. No time for bungee-jumping, or hang-gliding, as I like to say to my clients. And also, in general, the real estate market is still declining. Mars and Saturn are both planets connected with property. My feeling is that perhaps the real estate market will get better when Mars gets into Leo, and Saturn goes direct, at the end of May. Charlotte: Thats something to look forward to. Dennis its been great to hear a bit about your life lately. I hope we can continue our conversation soon! Thank you for all youve done for Jyotish in America. Dennis M. Harness, Ph.D. Biography: Dennis M.
