Jyotish Star of the Month |
A Conversation with Christina CollinsBy Juliana SwansonInterview Date: December 2012 Juliana Swanson: Please tell us how you got started in your profession as a world-class astrologer?
I observed this and said, Grandpa, I want to learn to do the charts! He said, yes, a little now, first from watching the sky, then charts when you are older. I realized much later that he knew I would be an astrologer and that he wanted my initiation to be auspicious. His reasoning was that I had Pisces Moon in a kendra (square) from Uranus in Gemini, at nearly the same degree. He felt that this was a sign of an astrologer as Uranus is the higher octave of Mercury, and Uranus is in Mercurys sign and squaring the Moon, which represents consciousness or mind. The summer of 1955, my grandfather began my studies when both Jupiter and Saturn were exalted in Cancer and Libra. Incidentally, Mercury was in its own sign of Gemini conjoined Ketu, a combination which is one of the Jyotish signatures for astrology. Mercury and Ketu conjunctions are often found in the natal charts of astrologers, as you know. Saturn and Jupiter were both aspecting my 9th house, and the transiting Moon in Aries, Ashwini nakshatra, was in the 2nd house (studies) from the natal Moon. My cousin Kathy and I (we were born a month apart) often were allowed to sleep outside (the farm was in a remote area with thousands of acres and no local neighbors) in the front yard, on top of one of my Grandmothers homemade comforters (quilts), covered up by other comforters. My grandfather grew sugar cane and raised dairy cows, which were free range, meaning that in the morning the cows would come into the yard and lick our faces awake if we werent quick enough to pull the comforters up over our heads, in which case they would lick our bare feet instead. Cows were our pets and they would follow us when we played out in the fields of sugar cane. One evening, when we were settled with my grandfather sitting on the covered porch in his rocking chair, he said, Now, look up there, see that? That theres Scorpio and that there? Thats Sagittarius! Christina, you were born right there in that space in-between! [My Lagna is 29 deg. 45 min. Vishakha] See that? Thats Libra, and there is Saturn in Libra, just about to move to Scorpio.
Juliana: Yes that was a magical time! Now Christina, can we backtrack a little and have you discuss more about your family lineage of astrology?
Juliana: So, how did you initially get introduced to Jyotish? Juliana: Yes. Dr. Ramans books truly have inspired many students of Jyotish in the USA and abroad. Tell us please, who were your other mentors along the way, and who were and are your spiritual teachers? Christina: Well, of course my Grandfather and my parents naturally were my initial mentors. In addition to learning at school, I also studied astrology, science, and medicine at home. I used to read JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) for fun! (Laughter)
And I had a wonderful time with Shri Rajeswari in Kerala, in 2002, I think it was. Juliana: Please share about your spiritual path and teachers. Christina: My initial spiritual teacher and path was with Jesus the Christ and Christianity. I had a deep personal connection with Him which originated when I was baptized by full immersion when I was twelve. In those days, you studied for some months or years prior to baptism in order to make an educated and informed decision. My experience was profound and filled with spirit. These connections with spirit have continued all my life. The next one occurred when I was initiated in November of 1968 into the TM program (Transcendental Meditation). My Pisces Moon was in sade sati, and Rahu, Ketu, Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto were all aspecting my Moon as well. That instruction also proved to be a very profound experience, and reminded me of my baptism when I was twelve. You will see that when people have these profound spiritual connections, there will often be both a Saturn and a Jupiter influence by transit to the natal chart. The nodal involvement is also often present. Rahu, Ketu and Jupiter by transit aspected the natal Saturn and Jupiter and Saturn by transit aspected the natal Jupiter, who once again was transiting by return to Sagittarius. It is a great research for people to erect the charts of their spiritual experiences, baptisms, and initiations and observe the transits to their natal charts. It is also interesting that the Lagna for my baptism was the same as the Lagna and degree from when I received my spiritual name from the Divine Mother. I also had a lovely experience that I wont relate in detail now, when some pandits in India did a yagya for me on my 60th birthday. They later sent me photos which explained why I had felt like I was in two places at once, the US and India! We generally dont discuss our experiences in meditation, for we might cause others to either think that they are doing it wrong because they dont have the exact same experience, or we might think we are doing it wrong, because we did, and they didnt though I did have an experience in 1968 that I didnt think about until an explanation dream I had in 2010. Juliana: Would you care to relate the dream? Christina: Well, okay, when I learned to meditate, I saw a beautiful starry night sky, with a huge purple eye. I had no idea what this meant at the time, and even used this example when I was teaching meditation, on why not to discuss experiences: If you see a purple eye, and your friend doesnt each might think they are doing something wrong Then in 2010, I had a dream about Vedic astrologer Vachaspati Ronnie Gale Dreyer. So many people misspell her name, and I have been one of them, spelling Gale, Gayle, etc. So, in the dream they said her last name (Dreyer) is Dr. Eyer as in Doctor of Ayurveda. So, I phoned her the next day, and asked her if she ever had wanted to study Ayurveda? (She was in the middle of getting her Masters at Columbia in Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures, with an emphasis on Sanskrit at the time. I told her about the dream and encouraged her to look into Ayurveda (especially as she has such a brilliant personal chart for the study of medicine). That night I had another dream, and I asked the guides (I have dreams with the Bhrigus and other masters), why my name doesnt have anything to do with Jyotish or Ayurveda. And, they reminded me of my TM initiation. The purple eye that I saw, they replied, represented my dharma. Jyotish is the highest limb of the Vedas and represents the eyes of Kala Purusha. I began my studies and training to become a teacher of TM (in 1971) and I taught thousands of people for many years. Maharishi was my first living teacher, and I have studied with others as my mentors along the way. I studied with a teacher who took his students on a great many trips to Hawaii, and other places of high energy, where we learned to dissolve our current egos and rise to a higher conscious plane.
Christina: Yes, and your class fantastic. Regarding the Ascended Masters, I am an aware voice channel for the Ascended Masters, in private session by phone, and in local groups or weekend workshops, and sometimes I even travel to other sites to present workshops. I mostly channel Djwhal Khul (DK), along with Serapis Bey, Lord Maitreya, Quan Yin, Saint Germaine, who I know as Kuthumi, and Sanat Kumara.
For more information for consultations or workshops people can email me, as my Web sites are in creative development by Ray Litman, who does all of my Web sites. And of course I am a life coach/consultant and I teach Jyotish and Vedic astrology workshops all over the world. ( [email protected] ) Juliana: Do you have a Hindu name as well? Christina: Yes, Rani Bhuvana Tara Chandi Saraswati. Juliana: Is that a name that corresponds with your natal chart? Christina: Well that is a good question. Its a name from what I call my naming chart, which actually initially came in a dream with the Divine Mother, Goddess Maha Kali. She was surrounded by others and they were all chanting Rani Bhuvana, Tara Chandi, Saraswati, over and over, for three consecutive nights. The third day, I was walking down the stairs, and a strong blissful spiritual energy hit me as I walked into the living room. So, I thought, Gee Id better sit down! So, I sat down and closed my eyes, and saw all the same people from the dreams of the previous two nights, but in the daytime while awake. I did peek at the clock to see what time it was for a prasna later. So then, I thought I would call my friend David Frawley (Vamadeva) and ask him what was going on! He said, Theyre giving you a name. Then he told me what each name meant. Juliana: What did the prasna chart tell you? Christina: Well, later when I looked at the prasna chart (a chart for a moment in time), I saw that the Nama Nakshatra sounds of the name I was given showed up as the initial sounds of the planets in that prasna. These Nama Nakshatras are 108 sounds corresponding to the 108 nakshatra padas in a 360-degree zodiac. Dr. Bill Levacy and his research into this subject initially inspired me to delve into the topic myself, back in the 80s. The prasna chart also has the transiting Saturn and Jupiter influences to my natal chart: Jupiter aspecting my natal Jupiter and Saturn; sade sati of the natal Moon, where often we see spiritual experiences occurring. (I was also in sade sati when initiated into TM); Saturn was throwing its 10th aspect by transit on my natal Jupiter; and the transiting Jupiter return was in play in Sagittarius; the Nama Nakshatra sound of the ascendant degree at 28 degrees 45 minutes was the sound of the name Tara (Tah-rah); the Moon sound was RO (Rani); the Jupiter sound was Bha (Bhuvana), and so on. All of the initial name sounds in Rani Bhuvana Tara Chandi Saraswati were present in the prasna. If anyone wants the whole list of 108 sounds, send me an email at [email protected]. If we get thousands of requests, then perhaps we will feature an article on Nama Nakshatra prasna sometime in the future.
Juliana: What was Saturns sound? Christina: (Laughter) Chandi!
What I find interesting is that all of the names I have been given have the same initial sound of Ra: Rani; ReNa; and Rainbowsnake Woman. Juliana: What about the sounds of your birth name? Christina: Yes, Christina Carol Collins the Nama sound is Kah and all three names and their sounds belong to Gemini and my 8th house from the Lagna, 4th from the Moon.
Juliana: What else did they say in that experience? Christina: They talked to me about the name Christina Collins on the third night of that three-night dream sequence. They said that my parents were guided to name me a western spiritual first name, so that I would begin life with the path of following a spiritual teacher as Christina means little follower of the Christ. With this name I would also hear the initial sounds of Krishna and Kali (Christina Collins). The Ch is pronounced like K; the nama sound Ch as in church is in Pisces. Overall, the Nama sounds are a very interesting study for anyone, and I have also done a live Webinar on this topic for ACVA online. Juliana: What was your experience of Maha Kaliwhat was she like? Christina: She felt quite powerful, loving, and so very beautiful. Her skin is deep black, and she has four arms. Her skin seemed glowing of ojas as if it had been oiled. She wore a gold choli (and I mean made of very thin metal) and a long gold metal skirt, and she had three red eyes that looked like rubies with light shining right through them. There also was a ruby at her navel with light shinning through it. Her head is completely round, with no hair, and not shaped like ours. The love she emanated felt completely overwhelming. Even remembering this experience, I feel her divinity. Juliana: Was this your first experience with her? Christina: Oh no, I have had several others. The first was in the early 80s when I was walking on the beach in the evening on Maui. She appeared and spoke some things to me. That time she was transparent, there was so much light that she would go in and out of being solid and transparent. Juliana: What did she say? Christina: Hard to articulate I had spent the day climbing Haleakala (in down ski overalls) and had seen her in another form as a Hawaiian goddess, at the top of the volcano that morning as well. She told me that morning, that her name was Pele.
Christina: I wanted to wait to publish until I had been an astrologer for many years, and that will be soon. They say its auspicious when you have practiced as an astrologer for 30 years, because you have then observed the transit of Saturn through the entire zodiac. At 60 years of experience, you have observed it twice. In the summer of 2014, it will be 60 years from when my studies began. Jupiter and Saturn will both be exalted as they were in 1955 when my Grandfather first began teaching me. I will be in Moon Dasa, who is lord of the 9th in the 5th, and my Hamsa Yoga will be activated. The large volume (Three) that I am working on will be ready then. (Well, Im praying it will be readyat least Volume One). Juliana: When did you begin the Jyotish Star? What inspired you to create this, and tell us a little about its mission? Christina: We began in February of 2010 and our mission as stated on our Web site is as follows: Our vision is to provide a space for disseminating information about the ancient Indian Vedic Systems of Knowledge for the modern audience. We intend to bring you knowledge and information at all levels of the learning process. From first interest, to advanced practioner of the Vedic Arts of Jyotirveda, Yoga, Ayurveda, and Vaastu, the Jyotish Star will serve all aspects of the Veda and Puranas. We featured Dennis Harness, Ph.D. in our premier issue, to honor him for all of his years as President of ACVA and now, as you know, he was awarded President Emeritus of ACVA which he received in 2012 in New Orleans. We started the magazine because I was inspired for a couple of years by editing the ACVA News, and felt it was time for out illustrious students to take over their school newsletter, with our support and assistance. Angela Pennington is doing a marvelous job as the current editor. I also wanted to spread out and cover people and topics that might not be associated with the college. Juliana: On another note, what are the main issues that clients bring to you for solutions? Christina: Clients bring many varied issues, just as I imagine that they do every astrologer. They often want their natal chart interpreted in order to discover who they are in depth, and their potential in different areas from relationships and marriage to job, profession or career. They want the current look or the transits interpreted to see if the timing is correct for their current plans and dreams, such as starting a new business, going back to school, moving to a new state or even country. Many people consult me for muhurta (a precise and exact time chart) for auspicious times to get engaged, to marry, to set their engagement rings, and to wear them for the first time. Also, I receive requests for dates to purchase cars or property or to put house on the market for sale. Probably the biggest request is to determine when to open a new bank account, to start or incorporate a new business, or start a new LLC. This is really great now with the Internet available and with people beginning their own LLCs by computer, because then we can pick the most auspicious time within a 24-hour period instead of just during daytime business hours. Often people want medical muhurtas for elective surgeries, like cataracts, or even lens transplants. It is so gratifying when someone who cant see at all has a surgery success with a transplant and can see for the first time. With the Baby Boomers aging they are asking for muhurtas surgery dates for knee replacements, and of course cosmetic surgery. The latter includes facelifts usually, and even men consult me for dates for eye lifts or abdominal liposuction surgery dates. Also, they often request muhurtas for important financial decisions. Currently, I am hearing from many Virgo rising clients, which sign typically desires perfection for their face and look. I feel that in many of these cases in 2013, they should for the most part, (of course it depends upon their individual charts as a whole) wait until the transiting Rahu and Saturn in Libra ends (about 18 months for Rahu). This is because Rahu can cause things to go awry with a face lift, as the 2nd house rules the face, and Saturn and Rahu will be in that 2nd house together for 18 months. In addition, we must really observe the transit of Venus (the ruler of Libra, where Saturn and Rahu are currently transiting), in order to see which months are better than others for procedures. For clarity, I am speaking in this conversation mainly of this transit as it pertains to Virgo lagnas and Moon signs (Chandra lagnas). Of course we must always look at the entire chart as a whole. Maybe the Moon rising chart will make it different I also get a lot of requests for pet astrology, probably because people know that I am an animal lover. Juliana: Yes, you have adorable dogs. What are their names again? Christina: Thank you! I have Shukra, Bella and Lakota Bear. Juliana: Do clients actually want their pets natal chart interpreted? Christina: Sometimes they do, though they are more likely to want to me to look at the charts of potential puppies from reputable breeders (or even if they know the day any pet was born) before they consider purchasing a pet. We look for things like behavioral problems which would be afflicted Mercury or Moon or both. We look for stubborn or independent qualities which would make them hard to train for showing, because they might not mind. (Laughter) We also look for potential medical issues like hip problems etc. Sometimes we have the charts of other pets in the family, and we take a look at compatibility factors not only between the potential owner and dog, but between the new pet and the existing pet in the household. I do this with my own pets, except for Lakota Bear; he is a rescue dog to whom I could not say no. People also ask for an auspicious muhurta for adopting a pet and bringing it to meet the family for the first time. Of course, clients request this for human adoptions as well! Juliana: As a life coach, how do you integrate astrology? Christina: We take a new venture from inception to launch. Often people get their inspiration before they meet me, and have their plan already in place. In other cases, their foundation or career planning Jyotish session gives them either a confirmation of what they already knew they wanted to do, or new ideas for areas of excellence in which they could develop a business. We use muhurta for creating the LLC or Corporation, for filing papers, for signing leases, purchasing vehicles, corporate meetings and releases. We structure compatibility studies for partnerships or for hiring employees from staff to actors, musicians, dancers, or in one case wranglers for a horse and dude ranch! We also use compatibility studies to determine who should share an office, who should work alone, and even who should have what assignments such as Media Director or Acquisitions Manager. It really varies with the clients and their needs, as does all Jyotish. I also refer clients to my Webmaster Ray Litman at hrcdomains.net to obtain a reasonably priced domain name and to create a Web site presence for them. So, life coaching involves Jyotish at every angle, even partnership dissolution or the sale of a company. Depending upon the client, we will use muhurta in order to do pujas, yagyas, and Vaastu Shastra. Juliana: Is there any advice you can offer to budding astrologers in terms of the educational journey? Christina: Yes, initially, seek to develop personal consciousness and self with meditation, Ayurvedic diet, yoga, and exercise. For, as I know you know, Jyotish contains an element of intuition, and the more self developed and clear the container, the better will be the result. I like to say, wash the dishes before you serve another meal, the experience will be more pleasant. (laughter) Secondly, learn the basics well. Understand the meanings of the planets and their energies, the houses and what they represent, and the signs and their symbolism. Then, as you study with a private coach or tutor and an online program such as ACVA (www.acvaonline.org), you wont struggle and will have more ease in learning synthesis, or how it all goes together. When I accept a student to tutor towards accreditation, I do two things. I first require a natal foundation appointment with me, and then I examine our compatibility together. And, in that appointment I evaluate where they are in knowing planets, houses and signs. I might say (and have said), who is the ruler of Cancer? If they say uh, is it Venus? Then I know they need to study a little bit on their own before they tutor with me. In the process they will also figure out if they really love the topic and if this is indeed a good career path to follow. Juliana: Any advice re: how to run a successful astrological practice? Christina: Yes, and that is on our agenda for the Jyotish Star in the near future. Charlotte Benson, our Associate Editor, is planning a column or a series of articles with this very topic. She will be interviewing other astrologers from time to time as well. Juliana: That is really great, and I am sure Jyotish students will appreciate that resource! Christina: Were here to serve. Juliana: Thank you, Christina, for a fantastic interview and for all your dedication and service to the Vedic astrology community. Christina: My deep pleasure. Christina Collins Biography:
