2014 Libra Sun Transit

By Vachaspati Christina Collins

Happy Birthday to our Libras!

When the Sun moves to Libra, its usual sign of debilitation (neecha), it will be cancelled for those born this year as the Sun in Libra will be conjunct the exalted Saturn. After this month, this particular Neecha Banga (cancellation of debilitation by aspect from an exalted planet, in this case Satur) cannot occur again for 30 years. For those with their natal, Moon Sun or Rising in Libra, the exalted Saturn transit creates sadi sati (the 7 and year transit of Saturn which occurs with Saturn in the 12th house, the 1st house and the 2nd house from the Libra position). With Moon it is called sadi sati, with Sun, Surya sadi sati and with the rising sign, Lagna sadi sati. Some astrologers also observe Lagnapati sadi sati (12th from the ruler of the rising sign, 1st from that planet and 2nd house from that planet for Libra this would be Venus). This is true in general practice. For absolute accuracy, calculate the sadi sati for 45 degrees behind, and 45 degrees ahead of the degree of the natal Moon. Depending upon the degree of your moon, your sadi sati could begin earlier or end later than you might think.

For Libra, Saturn is yoga karaka (significator of union) or the planet of power for the sign. The Yogkaraka is a planet that rules both an angle and a trinal house. The angles are houses 1, 4, 7 and 10 and the trines are 1, 5, and 9. From Libra, Saturn rules the 4th house (angle) and the 5th house (trine). (This is also the case for Taurus rising, where Saturn rules the 9th house and the 10th house). Because of this factor, Saturn, who is also best friends of Venus the ruler of Libra does very well in the Sign of Libra.

To better understand sadi sati the Binashtakavarga can be examined. We will take a hypothetical chart for October 23rd and look at its Binashtakavarga charts. The technique is to examine the 12th house, 1st house and 2nd house. If the planet is the Moon, you examine the Moons binash, if the Sun, the Suns binash, if the lagna, the lagna binash and if the ruler of Libra, examine Venus (the Lagnapati). You then observe Saturns binashtakavarga points. The points can be from 0 to 8. What you are hoping for is that the Moon (or planet/placement in question) has MORE points than Saturn does in its binash.

In the example of the Moon in this instance, the binash for the moon has 2 points in Virgo, 3 points in Libra and one point in Scorpio. In Saturns binash there are 2 points in Virgo, 3 points in Libra and 3 points in Scorpio. You can get an indication of which 2 and time period of the three will have the most challenges for the individual chart, by examining who has the higher points the Moon or Saturn. When the Moon (or planet) has more points in any of the three houses being examined, then it can withstand the onslaught of Saturn.

If Saturn is stronger, that will indicate more challenges during that particular house transit. You can see in the example below, that Saturn is 2 points stronger than the Moon while transiting in Scorpio so this period could be the more challenging part of sadi sati. Then you repeat from the other placements, the Sun, Lagna and Lagnapati. (In this example chart where all three are in Sadi Sati.) When there is a tie in number, then the transit will be less likely to be as difficult, and of course when the lower points go to Saturn, the challenges will be less. (If you are not doing the charts by hand, then be sure to calculate the binashtakavarga in several different software programs, and research the past with the client if there is a difference in results from the different programs). In the example below, the Sun is stronger than Saturn throughout, the Lagna is weaker in the last Scorpio transit of Saturn, and Venus is either a tie or stronger.

Moon231
Sun334

There are many other techniques as well that must be observed to explain Sadi Sati including the placement of Venus, the ruler (Lagnapati) and other planets aspecting both natally and by transit during the time period in question, what dasa or time period you are running, and even your age or stage in life. Each person experiences sadi sati approximately 3 times in a given lifetime. Each of the three cycles has a different meaning, influenced largely by your age at the time your sadi sati is in operation. (Here is when you consult your astrologer.

The mutual reception house for the combined transit of Jupiter and Saturn for Libra is Cancer, the 10th house.

Libra Transit Key

Saturn/Jupitermutually aspect House 10(House in Play Jupiter and Saturn aspect)
Saturnaspects houses 1, 3, 7, 10
Jupiteraspects houses 2, 4, 6, 10
Rahu in Virgoaspects houses 4, 6, 8, 12(Jupiter and Rahu both aspect the 6th)
Ketu in Piscesaspects houses 2, 6, 10, 12(Jupiter and Ketu both aspect 2nd and 10th)

Libra, during the Sadi Sati period will have Saturn transiting the 1st (Saturns transit through a house, teaches the lessons of the house) will bring the opportunity to slow down and focus on the Self, and what you need to accomplish and learn about yourself. Rahu and Ketu transiting in the 6/12 nodal axis lends an opportunity to do service for others (Ketu in the 6th) and Rahu in the 12th to focus on spiritual matters, enlightenment and visiting ashrams. There is a spiritual rule serve so you dont have to be served. On the high side of interpretation, the 6th is how you serve the dharma or life purpose (In derived houses, the 6th is always 10th from the 9th house of dharma). In the challenging lower side of interpretation, the 6th is the house of enemies, litigation and illness. Ketu transiting the 6th house in a water sign, can bring illness, including a tendency towards addiction (Pisces). So addiction can be positive so choose a wise thing to be addicted to during this 18 month transit of the nodes. Instead of alcohol or sugar, choose a new diet plan and stay committed to it during this transit. With Rahu in the 12th house of hospitals have testing done, like a colonoscopy if your age group warrants it. You can also do some volunteer work in hospitals or ashrams. (Rahu, Saturn and Mars transiting through the 12th house (Virgo), who rules the intestines can bring the disease process). Keep a watchful eye on a good, nutritious diet. Overall with transiting Jupiter aspecting the 2nd house of self-earned wealth, the 4th house of fixed assets, the 6th house of service and positioned in the 10th house of occupation Libra should focus intently on these matters.

Rahu represents desire and what we are here to work on in this lifetime, what we need to learn, Ketu rules the opposite, Liberation, Enlightenment or Moksha. The rulers of the Rahu and Ketu, often called the karmic control planets can be how the karma plays out or manifests. So with the transiting Rahu in Virgo ruled by Mercury and Ketu in Pisces ruled by Jupiter the transits of Mercury and Jupiter will indicate how this transit manifests and what houses those two transit for Libra will be Jupiter in Cancer/Leo, and Mercury in each sign every year until the nodes move. In early 2016 on Jan 8th the nodes move to Leo/Aquarius. That will be the potential prosperity transit for Libra as both Jupiter in Leo and Rahu in Leo will transit through the 11th house in Kodanda Rahu yoga. This yoga is more material than spiritual. (Saturn will be still sitting in Libras 2nd house, Scorpio for the few months that Jupiter and Rahu in Libra transit together so the strength of the 2nd house and Mars its ruler must also be taken into account.

It is considered positive or fortunate to have the 6/12 nodal axis at birth. With Rahu in the 6th and Ketu in the 12th. (Because Ketu is moksha karaka in the house of enlightenment and liberation, the 12th house means the same thing. This is one example of how the karaka rule does not apply for example, Jupiter the karaka for children, in the 2nd house of family life or the 5th house of children can deny children, or Saturn in the 8th house can deny death and bring longevity instead.) However the reverse axis, as the nodes are now transiting, with Rahu in the 12th and Ketu in the 6th for Libra, means pay attention to your health and your service to your destiny and to others, and the mutual Saturn/Jupiter aspect to the 10th house of career means build up your career. Rahu and Ketu rule over karma. This is the law of action, what goes out will return.

Rahu is where we need to focus for Libra because it is aspecting the 4th house where it can bring benefits from education and fixed assets, but also aspects all three dustanas 6, 8 and 12 the houses of difficulty. Of course, Jupiter from Cancer aspects the 6th house of health as well, which can be positive depending upon the chart as a whole, keeping in mind that Jupiter, though a natural benefic is a functional malefic for Libra because it rules houses 3 and 6.

Libra can make great spiritual progress during these transits, especially as the eclipses occur on the 6/12 axis. Meditate more, do abhyanga and panchakarma if possible. (Oil massage).

The Libra stone is the diamond as ruler of the rising sign.

Because Venus also rules the 8th house for Libra, if the chart as a whole supports it, I often recommend the Blue sapphire for Saturn, as Saturn is yogkaraka and raja yoga producer as ruler of the 4th house (angle) and 5th house (trine) especially if Saturn is well placed in the chart. Care must be taken with emerald as Mercury rules the good 9th and the dustana 12th. Also make sure if you purchase a blue sapphire that you do not obtain a square or rectangular stone. The square belongs to Mars a great enemy for Saturn. Round, oval or pear are preferred shapes.

Also, consider if any of the major players (Sun, Moon, Lagna) are in Jupiter ruled signs and yellow sapphire would be indicated from that positional point of view. Often if there is a conflict or competition for which gem would be best, a Navaratna might be in order.

Consult someone competent, a gem dealer who knows Jyotish, or a Jyotishi who knows gems before you spend a lot of money on a stone or talisman.

And, you dont have to have a stone. You can wear Saturns colors black or cornflower blue on Saturday You can do the daily mantra for Saturn. In Every case, please get advice.

Happy Birthday to our Libra Sun sign readers!!!
