Gems and Remedial Measures

By Christina Collins

Sometimes difficulties occur in life and most of the time the problems can be found in the natal horoscope. A weak placement in the chart can be remedied with wearing the gemstone of the planet causing the problem. Many remedial measures can be taken. You can wear the gem, you can say the planetary mantra (each planet has a specific mantra called a biju or seed mantra) you can have a homa (fire sacrifice) done, you can pray or do mantras to a specific deity. Often the mantra of Ganesh is done for he is the deity responsible for removing obstacles.

Sometimes you wear the color of the planet on its day of the week. In India there are aviaries with white birds for Venus or green birds for mercury. Where you buy a green bird and let it go free at sunset to propitiate the challenged Mercury in your chart. (by the way, they all home back to the aviary to be sold another day!)

When appropriate and affordable you can purchase a high quality Vedic gem of at least 2 carets for your chart. There should be no visible flaws and absolutely NO black spots or cracks. The stone is both purchased and set on specific muhurtas (electional charts) and worn for the first time on a specific date, time and finger.

Stones are worn on their own finger or on the finger of a planetary friend.

Diamond for Venus corresponds to the Thumb and can be worn on the thumb, the middle finger or the little finger.

Yellow sapphire for Jupiter is worn on the index finger or the 4th or ring finger.

Blue sapphire for Saturn is worn on the middle finger or the little finger or thumb

Ruby for the Sun is worn on the 4th finger or Sun finger.
Pearl for the Moon is worn on the 4th finger.

Emerald is worn on the little finger, middle finger or thumb

Red coral for Mars is worn on the 4th finger or index finger.

Hessonite Garnet for Rahu is worn on the middle finger.
Cats Eye Chrysoberyl for Ketu is worn on the index finger.

Traditionally women wear their stones on the left hand and men on the right hand. I feel in the name of integration that both can wear their stones on either hand.

We have basically two schools of thought. Wear your benefic stones (the ruler of your ascendant and/or 5th house) or wear the stone of the planet giving the problem even if malefic (feed the hungry tiger so it wont eat you!).

Most astrologers prefer the benefic stones. Some astrologers approve of the secondary stones for example a peridot can be worn for mercury if an emerald is out of reach.

If you want to propitiate the planets you can do the mantras of all 9 on their day of the week. (Rahu on Saturns day and Ketu on Mars day) and you can wear the planets color on its weekday.

Monday is Moons day wear white
Tuesday is Mars day wear reddish/orange or coral
Wednesday is Mercurys day wear green
Thursday is Jupiters day wear yellow
Friday is Venus day - wear white
Saturday is Saturns day wear blue/purple or black.
Sunday is the Suns day wear red.

Rahu and Ketu do not have a weekday. Their colors are Rust or Hessonite (honey/blood/moonbeam or the color of cows urine) worn on Saturday and Ketu is a yellowish lime green or another stone, turquoise and worn on Tuesday. Still make sure an astrologer has advised you to wear the stone of a node.

This is just a small taste and sampling look forward to the book that the OSullivans and I will write on remedial measures!
