Elements In Compatibility

Relationships - Business and Personal

By Christina Collins

In astrology many variable points should be considered when evaluating whether two or more individuals will connect in a meaningful and harmonious way, and endure for a long length of time.

One of the most logical, and important factors is the planetary elemental nature between two (or more) individuals. This should be compatible for maximum harmony. The twelve astrological signs in the Zodiac are either; Air, Fire, Water or Earth. They repeat in sequence:

Aries = Fire
Taurus = Earth
Gemini = Air
Cancer = Water

Leo = Fire
Virgo = Earth
Libra = Air
Scorpio = Water

Sagittarius = Fire
Capricorn = Earth
Aquarius = Air
Pisces = Water

Each element matches well with itself. For example the Fire signs of Aires, Leo and Sagittarius are inter-compatible, as are the Water signs of Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces.

Opposites attract each other. People with a predominance of Air; match well with people whose planets sit in Fire signs. (Air fans Fire, and Fire warms the Air, they support each other.)

People with planets or ascendants in Water placements dominant in their charts will support and match well with others who have planets residing in Earth signs. (Water nurtures Earth and connects the nutrients in Earth to plants which make them grow.)

Each element will tend to gravitate towards its own element; and each element enriches when it finds its opposite and full circle completeness.

Incompatibility arises when pairings of Air and Water or Fire and Earth exist. Air fans the water into rough seas or typhoons. Water likes to flow silently, sit still and be smooth. Water combined with Air creates lightning and thunder. Still water runs deep Disturbed water lashes out and storms.

An equally difficult combination occurs when Fire combines with Water. Fire easily gets extinguished under the influence of Water. The conflict and ashes of Fire pollute and disturb the tranquility of Water. And of course, Fire with Earth destroys the Earth, and then dies out itself when Water distinguishes the Fire.

In human interaction:

Fire = activity, ambition, passion and drive.
Air = movement, ideas, excitement and intellect

Water = stillness, silence, nurturing and need.
Earth = slowness, security, structure and nourishing

Often people have planets placed in several or all of the elements. This gives a balance to the chart and those individuals will have some factor that marries well with most others. People with one or two elements in their own charts dominant will within their own natures have harmony if the elements harmonize. (for example many planets in earth and water signs). Also common are people who have two elements of conflict dominating (Water and Fire). Ten placements are examined; the five inner planets: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Venus and Mercury, the two luminaries: Sun and Moon, the two nodes, North Node (Rahu), South Node (Ketu) And the rising sign (Ascendant, Lagna)

If there are mostly combinations of Air and Fire or Water and Earth, as individuals they will have more inner harmony than the internal conflict and difficult outer experiences that can happen when the combinations are Air and Water or Earth and Fire. And the subtle influence of the element Akasha, as the essence of sound, is found in the nama nakshatras. (which we will discuss in an upcoming article)

Of course all experiences in a birth chart dont occur all at once, it is when the dasas or time periods of the planets occur that you will see the harmony or the conflict manifest.

Evaluating the elements is merely one factor in a complete compatibility study. Of equal import is the ability to completely evaluate or delineate a horoscope. That knowledge should be strong before attempting to compare two charts to each other. Then, become adept at comparing two charts before evaluating compatibility between three or more people.
